Strapless Bras
Without straps, the band does everything. Here is why strapless bras fail, the one sizing rule that fixes most of it, and which shapes and brands make it work.
What is a strapless bra?
A strapless bra is a band-supported bra with removable or no straps, relying on a wide, gripped underband, boning at the sides and a firm cup to stay in place. Most are balconette-shaped molded cups; longline versions add a wider band for more grip.
How it's built
| Part | Detail |
|---|---|
| Band | Wide, firm, silicone-gripped; the whole system. |
| Cups | Molded, usually balconette-cut, often with a slight inward angle. |
| Side boning | Keeps the bra from folding sideways. |
| Straps | Removable or convertible. |
Materials. Silicone-gripped underband. Side boning. Firm molded cups.
Types and variations
| Variation | What it is |
|---|---|
| Molded strapless | The standard. |
| Longline strapless | More grip. |
| Multiway strapless | Straps for halter, cross-back. |
| Adhesive / stick-on | Not a bra; skin-supported. |
| Bandeau | Compression tube; light. |

Who it's for
- Round and teardrop shapes with firm tissue: a molded balconette holds
- Smaller and mid-range cups
- Anyone in an off-shoulder or strapless dress
Less suited:
- Relaxed and bell shapes at larger cups: a strapless can't lift low, soft tissue
- Anyone whose everyday band is loose: a loose strapless falls
How to size it
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Band down, cup up | Many fitters recommend one band size smaller than your measured size with the sister cup: the extra grip keeps it up. Some strapless (ThirdLove) run tight already; check the brand note. |
| Try it on and move | Raise your arms; if it slips, go down a band. |
| Full-bust strapless | Curvy Kate Luxe and Panache strapless run to J/K in UK sizing. |
Start from your measured size. Every rule above is an adjustment to a correct starting point: get that from the calculator or the measuring guide.
How it should fit
| Check | What right looks like |
|---|---|
| Band grips without rolling | Firm on the loosest hook |
| Cups fully filled | Empty cup space lets it slide |
| Stays put with arms up | The real test |
Common problems and the fix
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Slides down | Band too loose: down a band, sister cup up; or tissue too soft for a strapless. |
| Rolls at the top | Cup too big or too tall: a lower-cut strapless. |
| Digs at the sides | Boning too short for the band width: a longline strapless spreads the pressure. |
How to wear and style it
- Strapless, off-shoulder, halter (multiway)
- Occasion wear
Care, lifespan and when to replace
- Wash silicone gently; hand wash and air dry
- Replace when the grip stops gripping
Pros and cons
Buying checklist
- Band down, cup up (unless the brand runs tight)
- Arms-up test
- Longline for extra grip
Sizing a strapless bra by cup range
The measured size is the start at every cup, but the construction behaves differently as the load grows, and some ranges need a different rule or a different house.
| Cup range (US) | How a strapless bra sizes here | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| AA to B | Easy: light load, any strapless holds | Measured size; band one hook tighter |
| C to DD | The band does all the work: one band down from the everyday size, cup up | Sister size down: a 34D everyday is a 32DD strapless |
| DDD to G | A standard strapless slides; a longline spreads the load | Sister size down in a longline or a wide-band full-bust strapless |
| H and above | Only longline and specialist full-bust strapless bras hold | Sister size down; longline; expect to size by try-on |
Fit checks specific to a strapless bra
The six general checks in the fit guide apply; these four are where this style fails first.
- Fasten, then jump: the band does not move; if it does, it is a size too big regardless of comfort
- Raise your arms overhead: the top edge stays on the breast
- Silicone grip on skin, not on a lotion; the band should feel snug enough to be slightly more than everyday
- The cup edge lies flat with no gap at the top, because there are no straps to hide one
How brands cut it differently
Strapless bras vary in band height and grip more than in size. Fashion lines cut short bands with a single strip of silicone; full-bust lines cut tall bands, wide underbands and multi-row closures, and their longlines add boning. A strapless that slides in one house may hold in another at the same size; the wider and taller the band, the more it can hold without a strap. The brand dossiers record each house’s band, cup and wire tendency.

Strapless Bras: answered
How do I keep a strapless bra from falling down?
Wear a firmer band (usually one band down with the sister cup) and make sure the cups are fully filled. A longline strapless adds grip.
Should I size down for a strapless bra?
In the band, often yes: one band down, one cup up. Some brands' strapless already run tight; check.
Do strapless bras work for large busts?
Yes at DD–K in full-bust brands (Curvy Kate, Panache) on firm shapes; on soft, low tissue they struggle.
How should a strapless bra fit?
Band grips without rolling: firm on the loosest hook; Cups fully filled: empty cup space lets it slide; Stays put with arms up: the real test. Start from your measured size and adjust only for the rules specific to this style.
What are the types of strapless bras?
Molded strapless (the standard; Longline strapless) more grip; Multiway strapless (straps for halter, cross-back; Adhesive / stick-on) not a bra; skin-supported; Bandeau: compression tube; light.
How often should I replace a strapless bra?
Replace when the grip stops gripping
What should I wear a strapless bra under?
Strapless, off-shoulder, halter (multiway); Occasion wear.
Which brands make the best strapless bras?
Curvy Kate (Luxe strapless), Wacoal (Red Carpet strapless), Panache (Evie strapless), ThirdLove (Classic Strapless (runs tight)), Le Mystère (Soirée strapless), Freya (Deco strapless): each brand page converts your measured size and notes how it runs.
Should a strapless bra be tighter than a normal bra?
The band, yes: a band tighter than everyday, with the cup a letter up to keep the volume, so a 34D everyday becomes a 32DD strapless. With no straps the band is the only thing holding the bra up, and a merely snug band slides by the second hour.
Why does my strapless bra fall down?
The band is too big to hold without straps, or too short in height for the load. Go down a band with the cup up; above a DD choose a longline, whose taller band spreads the weight across more ribcage.
