A DD cup is a bust measurement 5 inches larger than the band. That is all a cup letter says: which is why a DD cup on a 30 band and a DD cup on a 40 band are very different bras.
What is a DD cup?
A DD cup means the fullest bust measurement is 5 inches (≈ 13 cm) larger than the underbust band. In UK sizing the same 5-inch difference is written DD; in EU sizing E. It is not a fixed volume: the volume a DD cup holds grows with the band it sits on.

The DD cup, in numbers
Volume is the pairing, not the letter. On a 34 band a DD cup holds the same as a 32DDD and a 36D: one letter away on the neighbouring bands. Read across any sister row and the letters change while the volume doesn't.
Is a DD cup big?
Only in relation to a band: a DD cup is a full cup on average bands and a modest one on the largest bands; in UK and EU it is written DD and E respectively.
The honest way to talk about size is the pair (32DD, 36DD, 40DD) because the letter measures a difference, not an amount. This is also why sister sizes exist: move down a band and up a letter and the volume stays the same.

Wearing a DD cup on a band that rides up?
The old +4 rule inflates the band by four inches and understates the cup by two letters. If you were sized that way, your DD cup is probably really a G cup on a smaller band.

Full cups need structure: three-part seamed cups, side-support panels and a balconette or full-cup shape hold and lift better than a single molded piece. Look for wider, cushioned straps and a three-hook band. Plunge styles work if the center gore is tall enough to sit flat.
