Sports Bras
The two sports-bra constructions support in opposite ways, and half of sizing a sports bra is knowing which one you're buying. Here is how they work, which impact level you need, and how to size each.
What is a sports bra?
Sports bras support in two ways. Compression bras press the breasts against the chest as one mass, usually alpha-sized pullovers. Encapsulation bras hold each breast in its own cup, like an underwire bra with sport fabrics, usually bra-sized. High-impact bras for D+ combine both.
How it's built
| Part | Detail |
|---|---|
| Compression | Stretch panel across the chest, wide underband; racerback common; alpha sizes. |
| Encapsulation | Individual molded or seamed cups, often wired; bra sizes; adjustable straps and hooks. |
| Combination | Cups plus an outer compression layer: the high-impact standard (Shock Absorber, Panache Sport, Berlei Ultimate Performance). |
| Band | Wide, firm; the underband takes most of the load in any construction. |
Materials. Moisture-wicking synthetics, wide elastic underband. Encapsulation: molded or seamed cups, often powernet inner. Adjustable hooks and straps on supportive designs.
Types and variations
| Variation | What it is |
|---|---|
| Compression (pullover) | A–C, low to medium impact. |
| Encapsulation (cupped) | Individual cups, bra-sized; medium to high. |
| Combination | Cups plus compression layer; high impact at D+. |
| Front-zip | Easier on/off at high support. |
| Longline sports bra | Extra grip and coverage. |
Which shapes it fits, and why

Who it's for
- Compression: A–C cups, low to medium impact, firm shapes
- Encapsulation: D+, running and high impact, any shape
- Combination: DD+ high impact
Less suited:
- Compression at D+ for running: flattening does not stop movement
- Loose bands at any size: a sports bra that rides up is not working
How to size it
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Encapsulation and combination: your measured bra size | Do not size up for comfort; a sports bra should feel firmer than an everyday bra on the loosest hook. |
| Compression: alpha by band, then check the cup | XS–XL follows the ribcage; above a C, choose a cup-split variant (Nike Alpha A–C / D–E, Adidas TLRD) or switch to encapsulation. |
| Lululemon and athletic brands | Numeric size follows the band; Enlite/Run Times add cup groupings. |
Start from your measured size. Every rule above is an adjustment to a correct starting point: get that from the calculator or the measuring guide.
How it should fit
| Check | What right looks like |
|---|---|
| Band firm and level | Firmer than an everyday bra |
| No bounce on a jump test | Jump in the fitting room |
| Straps snug, not carrying the load | The band should be doing the work |
Common problems and the fix
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Bounce | Wrong construction (compression at D+) or band too loose. |
| Uniboob and chafing | Compression bra without cups: try encapsulation. |
| Riding up | Band too loose: down a band; sports bras must be measured-band. |
| Straps digging | Band too loose or compression sized to the cup rather than the band. |
How to wear and style it
- Match construction to impact: walking/yoga vs running/HIIT
- Racerback for strap security
Care, lifespan and when to replace
- Wash after every wear (sweat degrades elastic); cool, no dryer
- Replace every 6–12 months of regular training: when the band no longer feels firm on the loosest hook
Pros and cons
Buying checklist
- Measured size, never sized up
- Encapsulation at D+
- Jump test in the fitting room
- Firm band on the loosest hook
Sizing a sports bra by cup range
The measured size is the start at every cup, but the construction behaves differently as the load grows, and some ranges need a different rule or a different house.
| Cup range (US) | How a sports bra sizes here | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| AA to B | Compression works; alpha sizes are acceptable if converted from the band | Measured band converted to alpha; compression or hybrid |
| C to DD | Compression fails at a run; encapsulation from a D, band a step tighter for high impact | Sister size a band down; bra-sized encapsulation |
| DDD to G | Molded or wired encapsulation is the only thing that holds at high impact | Sister size down; wide straps; three-hook closure |
| H and above | Wired encapsulation with a compression outer, from a full-bust house | Sister size down; fit by try-on with a jump test |
Fit checks specific to a sports bra
The six general checks in the fit guide apply; these four are where this style fails first.
- Jump ten times: the band stays level and nothing moves over the cup edge
- Raise your arms and twist: the band does not gape at the back
- Straps take a little weight, not the lift; a racerback should not pull the cups inward
- Breathe fully: a sports band is snug, never restricting
How brands cut it differently
Sports bras split into alpha compression brands, which fit the ribcage and support small cups, and bra-sized encapsulation brands, which fit the cup and support large ones. The alpha brands’ charts fold four bands and six cups into a medium; the bra-sized brands, mostly the UK houses and the sports specialists, follow the measured size with the band a step tighter for high impact. Sports bands also die fastest of any band: replace on a schedule. The brand dossiers record each house’s band, cup and wire tendency.

Sports Bras: answered
How should a sports bra fit?
Firmer than an everyday bra: band snug and level, no bounce on a jump test, straps not carrying the load. Buy your measured size: never size up for comfort.
What size sports bra should I buy?
Encapsulation and high-impact bras: your measured bra size. Compression bras: the alpha size for your band, then check the cup: above a C, use cup-split variants or switch to encapsulation.
Compression or encapsulation?
Compression for A–C and low impact; encapsulation for D+ or running; combination for DD+ high impact.
How should a sports bra fit?
Band firm and level: firmer than an everyday bra; No bounce on a jump test: jump in the fitting room; Straps snug, not carrying the load: the band should be doing the work. Start from your measured size and adjust only for the rules specific to this style.
What are the types of sports bras?
Compression (pullover) (a–c, low to medium impact; Encapsulation (cupped)) individual cups, bra-sized; medium to high; Combination (cups plus compression layer; high impact at d+; Front-zip) easier on/off at high support; Longline sports bra: extra grip and coverage.
How often should I replace a sports bra?
Replace every 6–12 months of regular training: when the band no longer feels firm on the loosest hook
What should I wear a sports bra under?
Match construction to impact: walking/yoga vs running/HIIT; Racerback for strap security.
Which brands make the best sports bras?
Shock Absorber (Ultimate Run), Panache (Panache Sport), Berlei (Ultimate Performance), Freya (Freya Active Sonic), Lululemon (Enlite), Nike / Adidas sports bras (Nike Alpha / Adidas TLRD): each brand page converts your measured size and notes how it runs.
What size sports bra should I get?
Your measured size for low and medium impact, the sister size a band down for high impact: a 34D everyday is usually a 32DD in a running bra. Never take the cup tighter; tissue squeezed over the edge bounces on its own. Alpha sizes convert from the measured band, not from a top size.
Compression or encapsulation?
Compression to about a C at any impact and to a DD at low impact; encapsulation from a D at a run and from a DD everywhere. Hybrids with an encapsulating inner and a compression outer are the high-impact standard above a DD.
