D Cup Size
A D cup is a bust measurement 4 inches larger than the band. That is all a cup letter says: which is why a D cup on a 30 band and a D cup on a 40 band are very different bras.
What is a D cup?
A D cup means the fullest bust measurement is 4 inches (≈ 10 cm) larger than the underbust band. In UK sizing the same 4-inch difference is written D; in EU sizing D. It is not a fixed volume: the volume a D cup holds grows with the band it sits on.
Same letter, nine volumes. A 28D and a 44D are both “D cups”: the second holds several times the volume of the first.

The D cup, in numbers
Volume is the pairing, not the letter. On a 34 band a D cup holds the same as a 32DD and a 36C: one letter away on the neighbouring bands. Read across any sister row and the letters change while the volume doesn't.
Is a D cup big?
Only in relation to a band: a D cup is where the myth of “big” begins; a 30D holds about the same as a 34B.
The honest way to talk about size is the pair (32D, 36D, 40D) because the letter measures a difference, not an amount. This is also why sister sizes exist: move down a band and up a letter and the volume stays the same.
Key takeaway: “D cup” describes a 4-inch difference. Volume depends on the band; the letter alone is not big or small.

Wearing a D cup on a band that rides up?
The old +4 rule inflates the band by four inches and understates the cup by two letters. If you were sized that way, your D cup is probably really a DDD cup on a smaller band.
| If a +4 chart said | Snug-measure size is likely | Same volume? |
|---|---|---|
| 32D | 28DDD | Yes: the band supports instead of the straps |
| 34D | 30DDD | Yes: the band supports instead of the straps |

| 38D | 34DDD | Yes: the band supports instead of the straps |

Bra styles that fit a D cup
Mid-depth cups have the widest style range: t-shirt, balconette, plunge and demi all work. Molded cups give a smooth line; seamed cups give better shape. If you gape at the top in a full-coverage style, you're likely fuller at the bottom: a balconette will fit better.
Frame like a 28 band, also look for narrower wires and shorter straps The same D cup is deeper and narrower here.
The widest choice of styles at this cup. Molded for a smooth line, seamed for shape and lift.
The D cup is wider and shallower; prioritise a firm, wide band and a wire that fully encloses the root. Longline and three-hook styles help.
Shape matters as much as size: see the fit guide for the five breast shapes and the constructions that suit each.
D cup: answered
How big is a D cup?
A D cup is a bust 4 inches (10 cm) larger than the band. Its volume depends on the band: a 30D is far smaller than a 40D.
What is a D cup in UK sizing?
A US D cup is a UK D cup: the same letter.
What is a D cup in European sizing?
A US D cup is an EU D cup. EU letters continue the alphabet one letter per inch above D.
What is the difference between a D cup and a DD cup?
One inch of bust-band difference: D is 4″, DD is 5″. On the same band, DD holds one cup step more volume.
Is a 34D the same as a 36C?
They are sister sizes: the same cup volume on a band two inches longer. The 36C will feel looser in the band and offer less support.
What measurements make a D cup?
Any bust measurement 4 inches above the snug underbust. Examples: underbust 31″ / bust 36″ → 32D; underbust 35″ / bust 40″ → 36D.
