Balconette Bras

The balconette is the fitter's favorite for a reason: an open top line that flatters more shapes than any other cup. Here is how it works, who it fits, and how to size one.

What is a balconette bra?

A balconette (or balcony) bra has cups that are cut straight across the top, sitting lower on the breast than a full cup: like a balcony. Straps sit wider apart, often at the cup's outer edge, and lift comes from the lower cup and wire rather than from covering the top of the breast.

CoverageHalf to three-quarter, horizontal top edge
SupportModerate to high
PaddingOptional
WireYes
NecklinesWide, square, boat
RangeA–K in full-bust brands

How it's built

PartDetail
CupsSeamed (three-part) or molded, cut low and wide with a horizontal or gently curved top edge.
WireOften slightly wider and shorter at the center than a full cup's.
StrapsWide-set, from the outer cup edge: which is why balconettes can slip on narrow shoulders.
GoreMedium height; lower than a full cup.

Materials. Powernet wings, firm elastic band. Lace or microfiber cups; three-part seams for shape. Wide-set strap anchors.

Types and variations

VariationWhat it is
Seamed balconetteThree-part cups; the most supportive.
Molded balconetteSmooth foam with the balcony line.
Longline balconetteExtra band for grip; common in strapless.
Multiway balconetteConvertible straps.

Which shapes it fits, and why

Who it's for

  • Teardrop and bell shapes: the open top avoids the gap a full cup leaves
  • Round shapes: sits flat, no gaping
  • Athletic shapes in wide, shallow balconettes
  • Anyone wearing wider necklines

Less suited:

  • Full-on-top shapes: the top edge can cut in and create spillage
  • Very narrow shoulders: wide-set straps slip; look for a balconette with adjustable strap position

How to size it

RuleWhy
Size as measuredBalconettes are the most forgiving of shape, so a size problem is usually a size problem.
Full-bust brandsPanache Andorra, Freya Offbeat and Fantasie Fusion balconettes carry the shape to K cups in UK sizing.
Between sizesGo up a cup: the top edge cutting in is the more common failure.

Start from your measured size. Every rule above is an adjustment to a correct starting point: get that from the calculator or the measuring guide.

How it should fit

CheckWhat right looks like
Top edge lies flatNo line pressed into the breast, no gap
Lift from the wireThe lower cup should feel like it is doing the work
Straps stay putIf they slip, try narrower-set straps or a racerback conversion

Common problems and the fix

SymptomFix
Spillage over the top edgeFull-on-top shape or cup too small: up a cup first.
Straps slippingWide-set straps on narrow shoulders: try a balconette with centered straps or a J-hook.
Gaping at the topCup too big: a balconette that gaps is rare; go down a cup.

How to wear and style it

  • Wide and square necklines that expose the strap area
  • Under fitted tops when molded
  • Off-shoulder when strapless

Care, lifespan and when to replace

  • Wash cool in a bag; seams and wires last longer than foam
  • Replace when the top edge no longer lies flat after washing

Pros and cons

Pros· Fits the most shapes· Lift from below· Open necklines
Cons· Wide-set straps slip on narrow shoulders· Full-on-top shapes may spill

Buying checklist

  1. Measured size; up a cup if the edge cuts in
  2. Seamed for lift, molded for smoothness
  3. Strap position vs your shoulders

Sizing a balconette bra by cup range

The measured size is the start at every cup, but the construction behaves differently as the load grows, and some ranges need a different rule or a different house.

Cup range (US)How a balconette bra sizes hereWhat to buy
AA to BWorks; the straight edge suits shallow shapes and the wide straps need shoulders to sit onMeasured size; check strap placement
C to DDThe fitter’s favorite at this range: open top, round shape, most cuts fitMeasured size
DDD to GThe UK full-bust core style; seamed balconettes with side support carry the loadMeasured size in UK letters, converted by position
H and aboveGood in seamed cuts from the full-bust housesMeasured size; convert by position

Fit checks specific to a balconette bra

The six general checks in the fit guide apply; these four are where this style fails first.

  1. The straight top edge lies flat across the breast with no tissue over it: full-on-top shapes will spill here and want a fuller cut
  2. Wide-set straps stay on the shoulders through a shrug; if they slip, the cut is wrong for your shoulders, not the size
  3. Wire sits behind the root at the side; balconette wires run wide in the UK houses
  4. Gore flat; a balconette gore is short and lifts easily when the cup is a letter small

How brands cut it differently

Balconette is where the UK houses and the US houses differ most in wire width and strap placement. UK balconettes are cut with wide, set-back wires and straps at the outer edge for the full-bust core; US balconettes run narrower and more central. A balconette that digs under the arm in one house and fits in another is the wire, and the dossiers name the tendency. The brand dossiers record each house’s band, cup and wire tendency.

Balconette Bras: answered

What is the difference between a balconette and a demi bra?
