Full-Coverage Bras
Taller cups, more fabric, more support: the full-coverage bra is the workhorse of the fitting room for fuller busts and softer tissue. Here is what it does that other cups can't, and where it goes wrong.
What is a full-coverage bra?
A full-coverage (full-cup) bra has cups that enclose the whole breast, rising higher toward the strap and often wider at the side. Seamed versions (three- or four-part cups) shape and lift; molded versions smooth. Side-support panels (a fabric sling inside the cup) are common at larger sizes.
How it's built
| Part | Detail |
|---|---|
| Cups | Tall, often three-part seamed; side-support slings at D+. |
| Wire | Full-height, wide enough to enclose the root. |
| Band | Firm, wide, three hooks at larger sizes; the band does most of the work. |
| Straps | Wider, often cushioned; set closer than a balconette's. |
Materials. Firm powernet wings, wide band, three hooks. Non-stretch upper cup, side slings, cushioned straps.
Types and variations
| Variation | What it is |
|---|---|
| Seamed full cup | Three- or four-part cups; the most supportive. |
| Molded full cup | Smooth foam full coverage. |
| Side-support full cup | Inner sling directs tissue forward. |
| Minimizer | Full cup that spreads (see minimizer guide). |
| Wireless full cup | Wide band, molded or seamed. |
Which shapes it fits, and why

Who it's for
- Full busts (DD+) wanting lift and containment
- Bell and relaxed shapes: seamed lower cups lift low volume
- Full-on-top shapes: the tall cup contains upper fullness
- Anyone wanting minimizing and smoothing
Less suited:
- Athletic and shallow shapes: deep seamed cups leave space at the apex
- Bell/relaxed shapes in *unseamed* full cups: a plain tall cup gapes at the top; it is the seamed, side-support version that fits
- Low necklines
How to size it
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Size as measured, then check the top | Full cups show a shape mismatch at the top edge: gaping means the cup is cut for more upper fullness than you have. |
| Full-bust brands | Panache Envy, Fantasie Fusion, Elomi Cate, PrimaDonna Deauville. UK/EU sizing, cups to K. |
| Minimizers | A minimizer is a full-coverage bra that redistributes; keep the measured cup, don't size down. |
Start from your measured size. Every rule above is an adjustment to a correct starting point: get that from the calculator or the measuring guide.
How it should fit
| Check | What right looks like |
|---|---|
| Top edge lies flat | No gap, no line |
| Wire encloses the root | Sits on the ribcage at the side, not on tissue |
| Band level and firm | The lift comes from here |
Common problems and the fix
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Gap at the top of the cup | Shape: teardrop/bell/relaxed in an unseamed tall cup: go to a seamed full cup with side support, or a balconette. |
| Hollow at the apex | Athletic shape in a projected cup: shallow molded full cup or balconette instead. |
| Spillage at the side | Cup too small at the root or wire too narrow: up a cup, wider wire. |
How to wear and style it
- Everyday under most tops
- Work and long days at D+
Care, lifespan and when to replace
- Wash cool; the band is the wear item: retire it when it won't hold on the tightest hook
- Rotate three or more at D+
Pros and cons
Buying checklist
- Measured size; check the top edge
- Seamed + side support at DD+
- Wire encloses the root
Sizing a full-coverage bra by cup range
The measured size is the start at every cup, but the construction behaves differently as the load grows, and some ranges need a different rule or a different house.
| Cup range (US) | How a full-coverage bra sizes here | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| AA to B | Gaps at the top on most small busts; there is nothing to fill the height | A demi or balconette; full coverage only on a full-on-top shape |
| C to DD | Good for full-on-top and soft shapes; shallow shapes gap | Measured size; change the cut if the top gaps standing still |
| DDD to G | The everyday standard: seamed full cups with side support carry the load | Measured size, UK letters by position, from a full-bust house |
| H and above | The construction that holds at this size | Measured size; tall wings, three or more hooks |
Fit checks specific to a full-coverage bra
The six general checks in the fit guide apply; these four are where this style fails first.
- Top edge flat with no gap above the tissue standing still: a gap here is shape, and a demi or balconette ends before it
- Wire sits behind the root at the side; full-cup wires run wide, and a wire in the armpit is a root narrower than the cut
- Gore flat and tall against the sternum without pressing
- Side panel smooth under the arm with no bulge over it
How brands cut it differently
Full cups are where the UK houses and the US mass market diverge most. UK full cups are seamed, deep and slinged, drafted for DD to K on bands from 28; US full-coverage bras are often molded, shallower and cut to a DDD on 34 to 42. The same measured 36G fits the first and does not exist in the second. Read the dossier for the cup construction before assuming a full cup will contain you. The brand dossiers record each house’s band, cup and wire tendency.

Full-Coverage Bras: answered
What is a full-coverage bra?
A bra whose cups enclose the whole breast, rising toward the strap: the most supportive everyday construction at fuller sizes.
Do full-coverage bras run big?
No, but they show shape mismatch at the top edge more than open styles do. Gaping is usually shape, not size.
Full-coverage vs balconette: which is better for a large bust?
Both work at K cups in full-bust brands. Full cup for containment and minimizing; balconette for lift and open necklines.
How should a full-coverage bra fit?
Top edge lies flat: no gap, no line; Wire encloses the root: sits on the ribcage at the side, not on tissue; Band level and firm: the lift comes from here. Start from your measured size and adjust only for the rules specific to this style.
What are the types of full-coverage bras?
Seamed full cup: three- or four-part cups; the most supportive; Molded full cup (smooth foam full coverage; Side-support full cup) inner sling directs tissue forward; Minimizer: full cup that spreads (see minimizer guide); Wireless full cup: wide band, molded or seamed.
How often should I replace a full-coverage bra?
Rotate three or more at D+
What should I wear a full-coverage bra under?
Everyday under most tops; Work and long days at D+.
Which brands make the best full-coverage bras?
Panache (Envy), Fantasie (Fusion), Elomi (Cate), PrimaDonna (Deauville), Empreinte (Melody), Le Mystère (Safari): each brand page converts your measured size and notes how it runs.
Who should wear a full-coverage bra?
Full-on-top shapes, soft or relaxed tissue, and anyone above a DD wanting the most containment and support a cup can give. Shallow and athletic shapes gap at the top of a full cup and are better in a balconette or demi.
Why does my full-coverage bra gap at the top?
Your breast is shallower at the top than the cup, which is the full cup’s one weakness. The volume may be right; the height is wrong. A demi or balconette ends before the empty part, and dropping a letter in the full cup would put the wire on tissue without closing the gap.
