Breast shape

Relaxed Breasts

Soft tissue, fuller toward the bottom. How to recognize the shape, which cups fit it (and why) and how to fix what goes wrong.

What it means

What are relaxed breasts?

Quick answer

Relaxed breasts have soft, lax tissue that sits low, with fullness at the bottom and little upper firmness. Common after weight loss, pregnancy or with age. Wired full-coverage cups with a firm band lift and hold; wireless and unlined styles offer little shape.

How to measure a relaxed shape: Lean forward 45°, or measure over a thin unpadded bra that lifts the tissue.

Fit problems

What goes wrong for relaxed shapes, and the fix

SymptomFix
Gap at the top of the cupCommon with soft tissue: seamed cup and firm band lift tissue into the top
Band riding up, straps diggingBand too loose: the shape needs a firm foundation; down a band, up a cup
Shape and size togetherA relaxed 38C measured standing often becomes a 36DD measured leaning forward: the volume was there; the tape missed it.

Sizing note: Relaxed shapes measure smaller standing than they need. Measure the bust leaning forward so the tissue fills its natural shape, and fit the cup to that.

Under clothes. Relaxed shapes look lifted and round in a seamed cup with side support and look lower in a molded one, whatever the size. The band does most of the work under clothes: a snug band lifts soft tissue an inch; a loose one lets it settle. Wide straps and a higher neckline suit the shape; low plunges lose tissue over the edge when you move.

In the fitting room

Four checks for a relaxed shape

  1. Lean forward and settle the tissue into the cup before judging it; relaxed tissue reads a letter small standing
  2. Check the top edge after a bend: soft tissue moves, and a cut that holds it standing may spill or gap moving
  3. Confirm the band is snug on the loosest hook; it lifts more than any cup on this shape
  4. Skip molded cups above a C: the mold holds a shape the tissue will not take

The root width and projection pages explain the two measurements a tape does not take; the types of bras hub lays out every cut named above.
