Breast shape

Asymmetrical Breasts

One breast larger than the other. How to recognize the shape, which cups fit it (and why) and how to fix what goes wrong.

What it means

What are asymmetrical breasts?

Quick answer

Almost everyone is slightly asymmetric; when the difference is a cup size or more, fit the larger breast and even the smaller. Stretch-lace tops, removable padding and slightly deeper cup styles hide the difference; rigid molded cups make it obvious.

How to measure a asymmetrical shape: Tape over the fuller side's fullest point.

Fit problems

What goes wrong for asymmetrical shapes, and the fix

SymptomFix
One cup gapsFit to the larger side; pad the smaller
One cup spillsCup too small for the larger side: up a cup and pad the other side
Shape and size togetherA 34C/34D pair is fitted as a 34D with a pad on the C side: never as a 34C.
How the shape changes over timeAsymmetry can increase with nursing (one side often produces more); re-check after weaning.

Sizing note: Measure the bust over the fuller side's fullest point and size the cup to it. The smaller side is evened with padding or a stretch top, never by choosing a smaller cup.

Under clothes. Asymmetry shows most in unlined cups and least in contour ones, because the foam holds its shape whether or not the smaller side fills it. A push-up pad on the smaller side only, or a removable insert, evens the line under fitted tops; under loose ones nothing shows.

In the fitting room

Four checks for an asymmetrical shape

  1. Measure the larger side for the cup and fit to it; the smaller side is padded or hidden, never squeezed
  2. Choose contour over unlined if the difference is more than half a cup
  3. Check the wire on both sides: roots can differ too, and a wire that fits the larger root may overshoot the smaller
  4. Scoop both sides; mild asymmetry often disappears once tissue is placed

The root width and projection pages explain the two measurements a tape does not take; the types of bras hub lays out every cut named above.

Asymmetrical breasts: answered

What are asymmetrical breasts?

Almost everyone is slightly asymmetric; when the difference is a cup size or more, fit the larger breast and even the smaller. Stretch-lace tops, removable padding and slightly deeper cup styles hide the difference; rigid molded cups make it obvious.

What bra is best for asymmetrical breasts?

Full cup. Full cup: contains the larger side; pad the smaller.

What bras should asymmetrical shapes avoid?

How do I know if my breasts are asymmetrical?

One cup fills and one gaps in the same bra Measurements differ by an inch or more between sides Molded cups show the difference; stretch tops don't.

How should asymmetrical shapes measure for a bra?

Tape over the fuller side's fullest point. Measure the bust over the fuller side's fullest point and size the cup to it. The smaller side is evened with padding or a stretch top, never by choosing a smaller cup.

Do asymmetrical breasts change over time?

Asymmetry can increase with nursing (one side often produces more); re-check after weaning.
