First Bra Sizing
The first bra is a fitting problem before it is a shopping problem, and the body it's fitting will change every few months. Here is when to start, how to measure without making it awkward, and what actually works.
In short
Start when there is breast tissue to support or the young person asks, not at a fixed age. Measure the same way as any bra (snug underbust, fullest bust) but re-measure every three to six months; choose soft, seamless or lightly lined styles with real band sizes rather than alpha 'training' sizes once the difference reaches two inches, and expect to buy two or three sizes across the first two years.
Who this is for: Parents and carers fitting a first bra; Teens measuring themselves; Anyone starting again after a long gap.
What happens when
Your size, right now
Calculated on your device; nothing stored.
For a first bra, if the difference is under 2″ an alpha soft bra by underbust is enough; from 2″, use this size in soft or lightly lined styles and re-measure in three months.
What's happening to the body
| Change | What it means for fit |
|---|---|
| Tissue develops in stages | Budding, then fullness below, then the upper pole: the shape changes as much as the size, so early bras should be soft and forgiving. |
| The ribcage grows too | Bands change as fast as cups in the early teens; a band that fit in spring may be tight by autumn. |
| Asymmetry is normal | One side often develops first; fit to the larger side, never the smaller. |
How to measure in this situation
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Measure over a thin top or bare, in private | Same technique: snug underbust, level; light tape at the fullest point |
| Round to the nearest whole inch, don't add anything | The +4 rule is worst here: it produces enormous bands on small ribcages |
| Re-measure every 3–6 months | Set a reminder; growth is fast and uneven |
| Let them do it | Show once, then let the teen measure themselves and report the numbers |
The sizing rules
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Under 2″ difference | Alpha-sized soft bra or bralette by underbust; cup barely matters yet |
| 2–4″ difference | Real band and cup (28–34, A–D); soft cup or light lining; wireless or flexi-wire |
| Bands 26–30 | Hard to find in mainstream shops. Panache Cleo, Freya, Curvy Kate and Bravissimo start at 28; some youth ranges at 26 |
| Between sizes | Take the snugger band with the sister cup: bands stretch and the ribcage grows |
Red flags
| If you notice | Do this |
|---|---|
| Pain or skin marks | Band too small or wire in the wrong place: refit, don't push through |
| Refusing to wear it | Usually fabric or visibility, not size: try seamless and skin tone |

First Bra Sizing: answered
What age should you get your first bra?
There is no age. Start when there is tissue to support, when sport is uncomfortable, or when the young person asks. Many start between 9 and 14; the range is wide and all of it is normal.
How do I measure a teenager for a bra?
Exactly like an adult: snug underbust for the band, fullest point for the bust, difference in inches for the cup, no added inches. Do it privately, show once, then let them measure themselves.
What size is a first bra?
Often 28–32 band with an AA–B cup, but the underbust reading decides, and bands 26–30 exist in specialist and youth ranges.
Should a first bra be wireless?
Early on, yes: soft cups and no wire while shape is changing quickly. Once the difference is two inches or more and the shape has settled, a soft flexi-wire is fine.
How often should a teen be re-measured?
Every three to six months for the first two years; growth is fast and uneven, and bands change as fast as cups.
What is a training bra?
A soft, unstructured first bra sold in alpha sizes. It trains nothing: it provides light coverage. Move to measured band and cup sizes once the difference reaches two inches.
