Alpha Bra Sizes, Explained Honestly
S, M and L look simpler than 34C. They are not simpler; they are lossier. One letter compresses four or more band-and-cup combinations into a single garment, every brand draws its own lines, and the wearers each letter fails are the ones its range quietly averaged away. Here is the math, the estimator, and what each alpha brand actually publishes.
What one letter actually contains
Band-and-cup sizing carries two independent numbers: ribcage and volume. Alpha sizing projects both onto one axis, which only works because stretch fabric forgives. An M that fits a 34B must also stretch to a 36A and squeeze to a 34C: three different bodies, one garment. That is not a flaw in any single brand's chart; it is what the format is.
The failure mode follows directly. If your body sits at the middle of a letter's range, alpha works and feels liberating. If you sit at an edge, or your cup volume is large relative to your band, the letter that matches your ribcage misses your volume. A documented example from Aerie's own blog comments: a reader whose measurements work out to roughly a 30H reported the chart offering a 34D, a chart-edge answer that fails on both numbers at once. That is the compression, not carelessness.
And the lines genuinely differ by brand. At our August 2026 check of published guides, Aerie's M and Skims' M covered essentially the same underbust range on paper while fitting differently in practice, because Skims' fabric compresses harder; Lively does not offer a standalone M at all, selling XS/S and M/L instead. Same letter, three different garments.
Your likely letter, estimated honestly
The generic map, labeled as generic
| Letter | Centers on | Typically absorbs |
|---|---|---|
| XS | 30 bands, smaller cups | 30A, 30B, 32A |
| S | 32 bands and neighbours | 32B, 32C, 34A, 34B |
| M | 34 bands, mid cups | 34B, 34C, 34D, 36A, 36B |
| L | 36 bands and neighbours | 36C, 36D, 38B, 38C |
| XL | 38 bands, fuller cups | 38D, 38DD, 40C, 40D |
| XXL / 2X | 40 to 42 bands | 40DD, 42C, 42D |
| 3X / 4X | 44 bands and up | 44C, 44D and beyond |
This is the convention most generic tables share, useful as a starting point and nothing more. Notice what it does: every row is a cluster of sister sizes plus their neighbours, which is why a letter can fit two people differently even when it fits both. Brands redraw these lines freely, and the deeper your cup, the less any of it holds.
What the alpha houses actually publish
Bralettes and wireless run S, M, L while structured styles keep band and cup; the bra-to-bralette conversion lives behind the size chart button on each product page, and the brand's own blog fields exactly the confusion this creates.
Bralettes and stretch styles run alpha to 4X while structured bras keep band and cup to DDD territory. Skims also documents deliberate in-between jump sizes on high-stretch styles: an admission, in product form, that one letter spans several bodies.
Wireless-first construction with its own size logic per line; treat each product's chart as the source rather than carrying a letter between styles.
Sport sizing that keys off band and cup inputs to recommend a garment size per style, with impact rating deciding how much precision matters.
Compression sport in S through XL plus band-cup guidance per style; the letter controls compression level as much as fit.
Nursing specialist whose sizing keys on a high-bust measurement, a different geometry with a clinical reason; follow their method, not a generic table.
Runs both systems across an unusually wide range, with chart fragmentation between lines noted in our records; check the chart on the exact product.
High-street basics where bralettes run alpha and structured styles run band and cup; our audit records off-by-one cup ladders in some of its retail guides, so convert by position.
Notes reflect each brand's published guidance and our dossier records at the August 2026 check; product-page charts change silently, so the chart on the exact product you are buying is always the final word.
When alpha works, and when to refuse it
Alpha earns its keep in stretch: bralettes, lounge, compression sport, sleep. There the fabric does the fitting and a letter is enough information. Our bralette guide covers which soft styles still deliver structure.
Alpha fails at depth. Past about a DD, the letter that matches your ribcage stops matching your volume, and no stretch fabric closes that gap with support intact. Bra-sized sport and bra-sized everything remain the honest answer: the full-bust guide and the high-impact guide name the houses that build them.
Straddling a line is normal, not a body problem. The estimator above flags it, and the tiebreak is the garment's job: smaller for compression and work, larger for comfort and hours. Where a brand offers in-between sizes, as Skims does with jump sizes, that is the format admitting the same thing.
Alpha sizing, answered
What bra size is a medium?
There is no fixed answer, which is the point of this page. Under the common convention an M centers near a 34 band with B to D cups, but each brand draws its own lines: at our August 2026 check, Aerie's M and Skims' M covered essentially the same underbust range while fitting differently because Skims' fabric is far more compressive. Always open the specific product's chart.
Why do bralettes use S, M, L instead of real sizes?
Stretch fabric tolerates a range of bodies per garment, so brands collapse many band-and-cup combinations into one letter to simplify stock and choice. The trade-off is precision: one letter can span four or more traditional sizes, and the wearers it fails are the ones far from the middle of each range.
I am between two letters. Which do I take?
Decide by what the garment is for. In compression sport, the smaller letter works harder and the larger is kinder for long wear; in a lounge bralette, comfort usually wins and the larger letter is the pick. Skims documents this explicitly, offering deliberate in-between jump sizes on some stretch styles.
Does alpha sizing work for full busts?
Poorly, in general. A letter drawn around the middle of the bell curve serves a 30G badly: the band that matches the ribcage pairs with a cup that does not. Bra-sized garments remain the honest answer at depth, and our full-bust guide shows who builds them.
How do I convert my bra size to an alpha size?
Use the estimator above for the common convention, then confirm against the specific brand's own chart, because each brand's lines differ. Where a brand publishes a bra-to-alpha conversion, as Aerie does on its product pages, that chart outranks any generic table including ours.
