Bralettes
Soft, wireless, usually alpha-sized: the bralette is comfortable by design and supportive by accident. Here is when it works, when it doesn't, and how to pick a size that fits more than your ribcage.
What is a bralette?
A bralette is an unstructured, wireless bra, typically without molded cups, sold in alpha sizes (XS–XL) or occasionally in bra sizes. Lace, cotton and stretch mesh are typical; support comes from fabric tension and a wide underband, not from cups or wire.
How it's built
| Part | Detail |
|---|---|
| Cups | Unlined or lightly lined stretch fabric; no molding, sometimes removable pads. |
| Band | Wide elastic underband, often the only real structure. |
| Straps | Thin or decorative; not load-bearing. |
| Sizing | Alpha (XS–XL) on most; a growing number sold in bra sizes for D+ (Cuup, Panache, Bravissimo). |
Materials. Stretch lace, cotton-modal, mesh. Wide elastic underband. Removable foam cups in some.
Types and variations
| Variation | What it is |
|---|---|
| Triangle bralette | Two fabric triangles; least support. |
| Longline bralette | Wider band; more grip. |
| Lace bralette | Fashion; often unlined. |
| Seamed bralette | Some shaping and lift. |
| Bra-sized bralette | D+ designs in band/cup sizes. |
Which shapes it fits, and why

Who it's for
- Smaller cups (AA–C) on any band
- Firm, athletic and round shapes
- Lounge, sleep, layering under loose tops
- Anyone who wants comfort over shape
Less suited:
- Full busts wanting support: alpha bralettes fit the ribcage, not the cup
- Relaxed and bell shapes wanting lift
- Under fitted knits: unlined bralettes show shape and nipple
How to size it
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Alpha sizes fit the ribcage | XS ≈ 30–32 band, S ≈ 32–34, M ≈ 34–36, L ≈ 36–38, XL ≈ 38–40, with the cup barely a factor. Above a C or D on any band, support falls off. |
| Bra-sized bralettes exist | For D+, look for bralettes sold in band/cup sizes; they use seams and firmer fabric. |
| If between alpha sizes | Take the smaller for support, the larger for comfort: a bralette does not lift either way. |
Start from your measured size. Every rule above is an adjustment to a correct starting point: get that from the calculator or the measuring guide.
How it should fit
| Check | What right looks like |
|---|---|
| Underband snug | The only support there is |
| Cup fabric taut, not stretched | Stretched lace means the cup is too small; slack lace means too big |
| Nothing digging | A bralette should be forgettable |
Common problems and the fix
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Uniboob or no shape | By design in unlined bralettes; choose a seamed or lightly lined bralette for definition. |
| Straps digging | Alpha size too small in the band, or the bralette is being asked to support more than it can. |
| Riding up | Underband too loose: size down or choose a bra-sized bralette. |
How to wear and style it
- Layering under loose tops and open shirts
- Lounge and sleep
- As visible detail under sheer or low-cut pieces
Care, lifespan and when to replace
- Delicate; lingerie bag or hand wash
- Lace loses recovery fast: replace when the underband stretches
Pros and cons
Buying checklist
- Alpha size by band, then honest about cup
- Underband firm
- Bra-sized if D+
Sizing a bralette by cup range
The measured size is the start at every cup, but the construction behaves differently as the load grows, and some ranges need a different rule or a different house.
| Cup range (US) | How a bralette sizes here | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| AA to B | Ideal: a bralette covers and holds a small cup as well as most bras | Alpha size from the measured band |
| C to DD | Comfortable, little lift; bra-sized bralettes with seams give moderate support | Alpha from the band, or a bra-sized bralette in the measured size |
| DDD to G | Alpha bralettes fit the ribcage and support nothing; only bra-sized designs work | Bra-sized bralettes only, measured size |
| H and above | Rarely made and rarely useful; lounge and sleep only | Bra-sized; expect no lift |
Fit checks specific to a bralette
The six general checks in the fit guide apply; these four are where this style fails first.
- The underband sits snug and level, because it is the only structure
- Lift the bralette by the straps: the band should hold the bra in place without them
- Triangle cups cover the nipple and stay put through a bend; a gap at the center is normal on wide-set breasts
- No tissue over the edges under a fitted top; a bralette that spills is a size or cut problem, not the style
How brands cut it differently
Alpha sizing is the whole sizing story for bralettes, and every brand maps letters to bands differently: one house’s medium covers a 32D and a 36B, another’s covers neither. Convert from the measured band with the alpha size converter, never from a top size. The few bra-sized bralettes, from the full-bust houses and a handful of US direct brands, follow the measured size and are the only ones with real support above a C. The brand dossiers record each house’s band, cup and wire tendency.

Bralettes: answered
How do I know my bralette size?
Alpha sizes follow the band: your snug underbust maps to XS–XL. If you are above a C cup, expect little support at any alpha size and consider a bra-sized bralette.
Are bralettes supportive?
For smaller, firmer busts, adequately. For D+ or soft tissue, no: they compress rather than lift.
Can I wear a bralette instead of a bra?
Yes, if the support you need is light. Many people wear bralettes for lounge and a wired bra for the day.
How should a bralette fit?
Underband snug: the only support there is; Cup fabric taut, not stretched: stretched lace means the cup is too small; slack lace means too big; Nothing digging: a bralette should be forgettable. Start from your measured size and adjust only for the rules specific to this style.
What are the types of bralettes?
Triangle bralette (two fabric triangles; least support; Longline bralette) wider band; more grip; Lace bralette (fashion; often unlined; Seamed bralette) some shaping and lift; Bra-sized bralette: d+ designs in band/cup sizes.
How often should I replace a bralette?
Lace loses recovery fast: replace when the underband stretches
What should I wear a bralette under?
Layering under loose tops and open shirts; Lounge and sleep; As visible detail under sheer or low-cut pieces.
Which brands make the best bralettes?
Calvin Klein (Modern Cotton), Skims (Fits Everybody), Aerie (SMOOTHEZ), Cuup (The Balconette (bra-sized)), Savage X Fenty (Savage Not Sorry), Harper Wilde (The Bralette): each brand page converts your measured size and notes how it runs.
What size bralette should I buy?
Convert from your measured band: XS about 30 to 32, S 32 to 34, M 34 to 36, L 36 to 38, XL 38 to 40, with brands varying by a size either way. Between sizes, take the smaller for hold and the larger for comfort. For bra-sized bralettes use the measured size.
Can a bralette replace a bra?
Every day at AA to C on a firm shape; on days off from a wire at any size. As a daily replacement above a D an alpha bralette fits the ribcage and not the cup, and the lack of lift shows and eventually aches. Bra-sized bralettes with seams reach a DD.
