T-Shirt Bras

The smooth, seamless molded bra built to disappear under knits. Here is what a t-shirt bra actually is, which shapes it flatters, and why so many people wear one a size wrong.

What is a t-shirt bra?

A t-shirt bra is a bra with molded, seamless cups (usually a thin layer of foam pressed into a cup shape) designed to give a smooth line under fitted tops. The cups can be lightly padded or unpadded, wired or wireless, but the defining feature is the absence of seams across the cup.

CoverageMedium to full
SupportModerate
PaddingThin foam, sometimes light push-up
WireYes; wireless versions exist
NecklinesCrew, scoop, fitted knits
RangeA–H in specialist lines

How it's built

PartDetail
CupsSingle-piece molded foam or spacer fabric; no seams. The foam holds its shape whether or not it is filled, which is why gaping shows more than in seamed cups.
WireUsually a standard-width underwire; wireless versions rely on a wide band and molded foam.
BandStandard elastic; two or three hooks depending on size.
StrapsStandard, often convertible.

Materials. Polyurethane foam (thin) or 3D spacer knit for the cup. Microfiber or nylon-elastane outer for a matte, seam-free surface. Brushed inner cup for skin comfort; laminated edges instead of stitched.

Types and variations

VariationWhat it is
Contour t-shirt braThe classic: thin molded foam, underwire, smooth back.
Spacer-fabric t-shirt braBreathable 3D-knit cup instead of foam: cooler, slightly less shaping.
Wireless t-shirt braMolded cups on a wide band; comfort first.
Lightly lined t-shirt braFabric-lined rather than molded: smooth but shows shape more.
Push-up t-shirt braGraduated foam under a seamless surface.

Which shapes it fits, and why

Who it's for

  • Round and teardrop shapes: the molded cup matches even fullness
  • Athletic shapes in shallow-cut molded styles
  • Anyone dressing under thin knits or fitted tops

Less suited:

  • Bell and relaxed shapes: single-piece cups gap at the top
  • Asymmetric busts: rigid cups show the difference; look for a stretch-top alternative
  • Very full busts wanting lift: molded cups hold shape but do not lift the way seamed cups do

How to size it

RuleWhy
Size as measuredMolded cups are unforgiving: the calculated size is the size. If it gapes, that is a shape mismatch before it is a size problem.
Depth varies by brandWacoal's Basic Beauty and Le Mystère's Dream Tisha are cut with more depth than most fashion t-shirt bras; Chantelle's are shallow and wide.
Wireless t-shirt brasBuy the measured band; the band is the support.

Start from your measured size. Every rule above is an adjustment to a correct starting point: get that from the calculator or the measuring guide.

How it should fit

CheckWhat right looks like
Smooth top edgeNo wrinkle or gap at the top of the cup: the foam should sit flush against the breast
Full at the apexA hollow at the nipple means the cup is too projected for your shape
Gore flatA floating gore in a molded bra usually means the cups are too small

Common problems and the fix

SymptomFix
Gap at the top of the cupShape: teardrop, bell or relaxed in a full-cut molded cup. Try a shorter-cut molded style or a seamed t-shirt bra; only then go down a cup.
Hollow at the apexAthletic or shallow shape in a projected cup: switch to a shallow molded style.
Visible under a top despite being 'seamless'Cup too small: the breast is pushing the top edge out. Up a cup.

How to wear and style it

  • Fitted tees and thin knits: the reason it exists
  • Under a shirt with a matte finish; avoid glossy fabrics that read through
  • Nude-to-you shades disappear under white; a black t-shirt bra under black only

Care, lifespan and when to replace

  • Hand wash or lingerie bag on cold; foam creases if crushed: store cups nested, never folded in half
  • Rotate two or three; foam recovers between wears
  • Replace when the foam dents or the band no longer holds on the tightest hook (6–12 months of regular wear)

Pros and cons

Pros· Invisible under knits· Consistent shape wear to wear· Widest availability of any style
Cons· Shows shape mismatch immediately· Warm in foam versions· Less lift than seamed cups at D+

Buying checklist

  1. Measured size, then check the top edge
  2. Depth: brands differ (Wacoal deep, Chantelle shallow)
  3. Foam vs spacer for climate
  4. Wired for lift, wireless for comfort

Sizing a t-shirt bra by cup range

The measured size is the start at every cup, but the construction behaves differently as the load grows, and some ranges need a different rule or a different house.

Cup range (US)How a t-shirt bra sizes hereWhat to buy
AA to BThe mold is shallow and the choice wide; demi and plunge contours suit small, even shapesMeasured size; a spacer cup if foam feels bulky
C to DDThe core range: the mold is drawn for this block and most people fit it in the measured sizeMeasured size; change the cut, not the letter, if the top gaps
DDD to GFoam gets thick and molds get scarce; contour still works to about a G in specialist linesMeasured size from a house that molds deep; spacer fabric
H and aboveFew molds exist; a smooth seamed cup does the t-shirt job with better supportFine-seamed unlined or a smooth side-support cup

Fit checks specific to a t-shirt bra

The six general checks in the fit guide apply; these four are where this style fails first.

  1. Top edge flat under a fitted t-shirt, standing and bending: any ridge is a gap dressed
  2. Nipple at the deepest point of the mold; higher means the cup is shallower than you
  3. No air pocket at the bottom of the cup when you press the foam
  4. Gore flat and wire on the ribcage; a t-shirt bra that floats at the center is a size short, not a cut problem

How brands cut it differently

US contour lines cut the mold a little shallow and the band a little soft; European ones cut deeper and firmer. The same shallow breast fills one house’s 34C and gaps in another’s, so a gap in the measured size is a reason to change house before changing letter. Foam also takes a set: a t-shirt bra folded cup-into-cup in the drawer keeps the crease. The brand dossiers record each house’s band, cup and wire tendency.

T-Shirt Bras: answered

What is the difference between a t-shirt bra and a regular bra?

The cups: a t-shirt bra has seamless molded cups for a smooth line; a 'regular' bra may be seamed, unlined or lace. Sizing is the same.

Are t-shirt bras padded?

Usually lightly: a thin foam layer that holds the cup's shape and covers the nipple. Padded push-up t-shirt bras exist but are a different category.

Do t-shirt bras run small?

No more than other bras, but molded cups show a size mismatch immediately. If yours gapes, check shape before size.

How should a t-shirt bra fit?

Smooth top edge: no wrinkle or gap at the top of the cup: the foam should sit flush against the breast; Full at the apex: a hollow at the nipple means the cup is too projected for your shape; Gore flat: a floating gore in a molded bra usually means the cups are too small. Start from your measured size and adjust only for the rules specific to this style.

What are the types of t-shirt bras?

Contour t-shirt bra: the classic: thin molded foam, underwire, smooth back; Spacer-fabric t-shirt bra (breathable 3d-knit cup instead of foam) cooler, slightly less shaping; Wireless t-shirt bra: molded cups on a wide band; comfort first; Lightly lined t-shirt bra (fabric-lined rather than molded) smooth but shows shape more; Push-up t-shirt bra: graduated foam under a seamless surface.

How often should I replace a t-shirt bra?

Replace when the foam dents or the band no longer holds on the tightest hook (6–12 months of regular wear)

What should I wear a t-shirt bra under?

Fitted tees and thin knits: the reason it exists; Under a shirt with a matte finish; avoid glossy fabrics that read through; Nude-to-you shades disappear under white; a black t-shirt bra under black only.

Which brands make the best t-shirt bras?

Wacoal (Basic Beauty), Le Mystère (Dream Tisha), Chantelle (C Magnifique / Norah molded), ThirdLove (24/7 Classic T-Shirt), Natori (Feathers), Soma (Vanishing 360): each brand page converts your measured size and notes how it runs.

Should a t-shirt bra be padded?

Lightly lined, not padded. The thin, even foam of a contour cup smooths and covers; push-up padding adds volume at the base and changes the shape. If you want the smooth line without foam, a spacer-fabric cup is the lighter answer.

Why does my t-shirt bra show under a t-shirt?

Usually a gap at the top edge, which reads as a ridge through a knit, or seams from a lined lace cup mistaken for a contour. A demi or plunge contour ends the cup before the gap; a true contour cup has no seams to show.
