Push-Up Bras

Padding placed low and to the side lifts and pushes tissue up and in. Here is what a push-up bra actually changes, by how much, and why sizing it to the look rather than the body goes wrong.

What is a push-up bra?

A push-up bra has graduated padding (thickest at the bottom and outer side of the cup) that lifts the breast upward and inward for cleavage. Padding is measured in 'levels'; a level-3 push-up can add the appearance of one to two cup sizes without changing the size you wear.

Who it's for

  • Athletic and shallow shapes wanting projection
  • East-west and side-set shapes: side padding brings tissue forward
  • Smaller cups wanting a fuller line
  • Round shapes for cleavage in low necklines

Less suited:

  • Full-on-top and round shapes at larger cups: extra top volume spills
  • Bell and relaxed shapes at larger cups: padding fills the top; support must come from the band, which push-ups often skimp on

How to size it

RuleWhy
Size to your measurementThe padding is added to your volume; wear your measured size. Choosing a smaller cup to 'maximize' effect causes spillage.
Padding level, not sizeWant more lift? Choose a higher padding level in the same size.
Bombshell-type stylesExtreme push-ups (two cup sizes of foam) sit differently: check the top edge for spill.

Start from your measured size. Every rule above is an adjustment to a correct starting point: get that from the calculator or the measuring guide.

How it should fit

CheckWhat right looks like
Top edge smoothNo spill above the pad line
Gore touchingAngled cups should still meet the sternum
Padding at the bottomIf the pad sits at the top of the cup, the bra is upside down in effect: check the style

Common problems and the fix

SymptomFix
Quad-boob over the topCup too small for the volume plus padding: up a cup, keep the padding level.
Cups sit away from the chestShape too shallow for the cup's projection: lower padding level, wider wire.
No liftPadding in the wrong place for your shape, or band too loose to anchor the lift.

How to wear and style it

  • Low necklines, evening
  • Under fitted knits when smooth-surfaced

Care, lifespan and when to replace

  • Foam and gel pads distort if crushed; store cups nested
  • Replace when pads compress unevenly

Pros and cons

Pros· Lift and cleavage· Projection for shallow shapes
Cons· Spillage if sized to the look· Warm· Extra volume can read bulky under fitted tops

Buying checklist

  1. Measured size, then padding level
  2. Smooth top edge
  3. Band firm enough to anchor the lift

Sizing a push-up bra by cup range

The measured size is the start at every cup, but the construction behaves differently as the load grows, and some ranges need a different rule or a different house.

Cup range (US)How a push-up bra sizes hereWhat to buy
AA to BWhere padding does its job: lifts, centers and adds a visible cupMeasured size; the padding replaces volume you do not have low down
C to DDAdds lift and cleavage at a C, little at a DD; the plunge wire is the sizing issueMeasured size; check the wire ends behind the root
DDD to GPadding adds weight and nothing else; rarely madeA seamed plunge lifts by construction; skip padding
H and aboveNot made, and would add nothingSeamed plunge or balconette

Fit checks specific to a push-up bra

The six general checks in the fit guide apply; these four are where this style fails first.

  1. Nipple sits at the apex of the mold with no gap above it: a gap means the cup is too big, not the padding too small
  2. Wire ends behind the breast at the side; plunge wires run narrow and dig on a wide root
  3. Gore flat: a push-up whose gore floats is a cup too small pushing the pads apart
  4. Top edge flat under a fitted top; a push-up that bulges at the edge is a letter short

How brands cut it differently

Push-up bras are cut on plunge wires that run narrower than full-cup wires, and houses differ on how much narrower. Graded padding also differs: some lines pad the base only, some the outer side, and the "level 1 to 3" scales on the mass-market rails describe foam thickness, not fit. The measured size holds across all of them; what changes is where the wire lands and how much the pad pushes. The brand dossiers record each house’s band, cup and wire tendency.

Answered

Push-Up Bras: answered

How many cup sizes does a push-up bra add?

Visually, one to two depending on padding level; the size you wear does not change.

Should I size down for a push-up bra?

No. Wear your measured size and choose the padding level for the effect. Sizing down causes spillage.

Are push-up bras bad for you?

No: a well-fitted push-up is just a bra with more foam. Poorly fitted ones dig because the band is too loose to anchor the lift.

How should a push-up bra fit?

Top edge smooth: no spill above the pad line; Gore touching: angled cups should still meet the sternum; Padding at the bottom: if the pad sits at the top of the cup, the bra is upside down in effect: check the style. Start from your measured size and adjust only for the rules specific to this style.

What are the types of push-up bras?

Level 1 (light) push-up (subtle lift; everyday; Level 2 (moderate)) visible lift and cleavage; Level 3 / Bombshell (up to two cup sizes of foam; occasion; Push-up plunge) combined with a low gore; Gel or air pads: lighter than foam.

How often should I replace a push-up bra?

Replace when pads compress unevenly

What should I wear a push-up bra under?

Low necklines, evening; Under fitted knits when smooth-surfaced.

Which brands make the best push-up bras?

Victoria's Secret (Bombshell / Very Sexy push-up), Gossard (Superboost), Aerie (Real Happy push-up), Hunkemöller (Angie), Intimissimi (Gioia), ThirdLove (24/7 Perfect Coverage push-up): each brand page converts your measured size and notes how it runs.

Do I need a smaller cup for a push-up bra?

No. Padding replaces volume below the apex; the cup letter still comes from bust minus band. A push-up in a smaller cup spills at the top; a push-up in a bigger cup gaps above the pad. Size to the breast, choose the padding level for the look.

Does a push-up bra work above a D?

It lifts less with every letter and stops adding anything by a DD, because the foam is filling space the breast already fills. Above that, lift comes from construction: a seamed plunge or balconette in the measured size lifts more than any pad.
