Swim Sizes vs Bra Sizes
A bikini top is a bra asked to work wet, and most of them are sized with less information than any bra: one letter, or a dress number, standing in for band and cup. Here is why that fails, when it is fine, and how bra-sized swim quietly solved the whole problem.
One number, two jobs, plus water
Most swim tops size by dress number or S, M, L, which compresses band and cup into one axis exactly the way alpha bra sizing does. Everything on that page applies here, and then swim makes it worse: wet elastane stretches further than dry, so a top cut to fit in the fitting room loosens in the water, and the sizes were drawn around the middle of the curve to begin with.
The predictable result is the universal bikini experience: tops that fit the ribcage and gape at the volume, or hold the volume and cut the ribcage. That is not your body failing swimwear; it is a one-number system doing what one-number systems do.
The fix already exists. Bra-sized swim carries real band-and-cup sizes into swimwear: an underwired bikini top in 32F is a garment that exists, engineered by the same full-bust houses whose lingerie charts we track. It costs more because it is solving a harder problem, and past about a DD it is the difference between swimming and adjusting.
Your swim answer, both systems
Bra-sized matches use each house's lingerie chart as the reference; swim lines publish their own charts that can differ, a fork we document on the PrimaDonna chart, so the product page's chart is always the final check.
Chlorine, salt and the life of a swim top
Pool chemistry attacks elastane, the fiber every swim band depends on, and it does not care what the top cost. The habits that matter: rinse in fresh water the moment you are out, never wring, never machine-dry, and rotate two tops through a beach holiday the way you would rotate bras, because wet elastic needs recovery time exactly like dry.
Underwires themselves are fine in water; the myth has it backwards. The wire outlives the fabric around it. When a swim top dies it dies the way a bra does, band first, and the same signs apply.
Swim sister sizing
When a top you love only comes in dress sizes, sister sizing becomes your steering wheel. The same cup volume lives one size up with a looser band and one size down with a tighter one, so if a top fits your volume but squeezes, the next dress size up is usually the same cups on more band, not bigger cups. Knowing your measured size tells you which way to flex instead of guessing both directions.
Ties instead of fixed bands are the other honest tool: an adjustable tie-back absorbs the band half of the problem, leaving only cup volume to match, which is why tie styles fit more bodies than their size charts suggest.
Swim sizing, answered
What swim size am I if I wear a 34DD bra?
Two answers. In dress-size or S, M, L swim, the common convention puts a 34DD near the M and L line, and which side fits depends on the brand's own lines and fabric. In bra-sized swim, the answer is simply 34DD, or that brand's converted label for it, which is why bra-sized swim exists. The estimator above computes both.
Why do bikini tops never fit right?
For the same reason alpha bras fail: one letter compresses many band-and-cup combinations, and swim adds wet stretch on top. A top that matches your ribcage misses your volume, or the reverse. Our alpha sizing page walks the math; swim inherits all of it plus water.
Does chlorine ruin underwire swim tops?
Chlorine attacks elastane, not the wire: the band and fabric age faster in pool water than the metal does. Rinse in fresh water immediately after wearing, never machine-dry, and expect pool-heavy use to shorten any swim top's life regardless of construction.
Can I use sister sizing for swimwear?
Yes, and it is often the only tool you get. When a top comes only in dress sizes, knowing your sister sizes tells you which direction to flex: the same cup volume lives one dress size up with less squeeze and one down with more. The sister size calculator does the math.
Is bra-sized swim worth the extra cost?
Past about a DD, decisively: it is the difference between a top that works and one that merely covers. Below that, well-cut dress-size swim is often fine, and the money guide's logic applies: spend where the engineering problem is hard.
