How Long Do Bras Last?

About 8–12 months of real support with rotation and correct washing: half that worn daily. But the calendar is the wrong instrument: a bra's age is measured in hooks.

The built-in gauge

A bra tells you its age in hooks

The three hook columns are not size options: they are a timeline. A new bra fits firm and level on the loosest hook; as elastane relaxes with wear and washing, you move inward to restore tension. When you reach the tightest column and the band still rides up or lets the straps take over, the elastic has no recovery left. That is retirement, whatever the fabric looks like.

Component by component

What ages, and how it shows up in fit

Band: first to go and the one that matters: it carries ~80% of support. Fatigue shows as riding up and a suddenly "roomier" fit. Straps: stretch reads as slipping, and re-tightening weekly is a symptom, not a fix. Cups: molded foam creases permanently from bad storage and loses shape in heat; unlined cups mostly outlive their bands. Wires: metal fatigues into a wider curve: a wire that used to sit flush and now pokes at the side did not move; it changed shape. Any single component failing means the fit is gone; the band just usually gets there first.

The multipliers

What actually extends lifespan

Three practices, in order of effect. Rotation: elastane needs about 24 hours to recover its length after a day's wear; three or more bras in rotation roughly doubles each one's life. Cold, gentle washing: the full protocol is in how to wash a bra. No dryer, ever: heat degrades elastane permanently; one hot cycle costs months. Everything else: hand-wash vs. bagged machine, detergent choice, storage: is real but second-order next to these three.

At replacement

Retire the bra, then re-check the size

A year is long enough for a body to drift a band or a cup: weight, hormones and time all move measurements. Replacing a dead 34C with a new 34C repeats last year's answer to this year's question. Two measurements into the calculator take a minute; the five fit checks confirm it in the fitting room.

Answered

Bra lifespan: answered

How long does a bra last with daily wear?

Worn daily without rotation, an everyday bra keeps genuine support for roughly 4-6 months; in a rotation of three or more, 8-12 months. The limit is elastane recovery, not fabric wear: a bra can look new and be structurally finished.

How do I know a bra is worn out?

The hook progression is the gauge: a new bra fits on the loosest hook; you tighten as the elastic relaxes; when the tightest hook no longer keeps the band level and snug, the bra is done. Riding up, newly slipping straps and a wandering gore are the same verdict in different words.

Do expensive bras last longer?

Construction quality extends life meaningfully: denser elastics, three-column closures and sewn (rather than glued) channels age slower. But no price survives the dryer or daily wear without rotation; care determines more lifespan than cost.

Should I re-measure before replacing a worn-out bra?

Yes, always. Bodies drift on the same timescale as elastic: the size that was right a year ago may be one band or cup off today. Two measurements take a minute and prevent replacing a worn bra with a wrong one.
