How to Wash a Bra

A correctly fitted bra can be un-fitted by a washing machine in one afternoon. The rules are few: cool water, closed hooks, a bag, and never (ever) the dryer.

Why care is a sizing topic

The band is elastic, and elastic is mortal

Around 80% of a bra's support comes from the band, and the band is mostly elastane: a fiber that heat, agitation and skin oils degrade. Every care mistake shows up later as a fit symptom: a band that rides up, straps that suddenly carry weight, a bra that only works on the tightest hook. Washing correctly is how a correct fit stays correct.

The gold standard

Hand-washing, ten minutes

1. Fill a basin with lukewarm water: comfortable to your hand, roughly 30 °C / 85 °F; hot water is the enemy. 2. Add a small dose of mild or lingerie detergent; skip fabric softener entirely, it coats and stiffens elastic. 3. Submerge, swish, and let it soak 10–15 minutes. 4. Rinse cool until the water runs clear. 5. Press the water out between your palms or against the basin: never wring or twist; wringing bends wires and snaps elastane fibers.

The realistic standard

Machine-washing that bras survive

Three protections, all mandatory: fasten every hook (open hooks shred lace and snag straps), use a zipped lingerie bag (it prevents wrapping around the drum: the mechanism that pulls wires out of their channels), and run gentle or delicate, cold. Underwire and molded-cup bras take machine cycles worst; bralettes and unlined soft bras tolerate them best. If a bra was expensive or fits perfectly, it earns the basin.

Where bras actually die

Drying and storage

The dryer is not a risk: it is a verdict. Elastane loses recovery permanently with heat; one hot cycle ages a band by months. Instead: reshape the cups, lay the bra flat on a towel, or drape it over a line at the gore (the center): hanging by the straps stretches them with the water's weight. Store flat or upright with cups nested naturally; folding one cup inside the other creases molded foam permanently.

Retirement

Rotation, and reading the end

Elastic needs about a day to recover between wears, so a rotation of three or more everyday bras roughly doubles each one's life. With that rotation and correct washing, an everyday bra keeps real support for about 8–12 months of regular wear: the lifespan guide breaks down how each component ages. The end is a fit symptom, not a look: you have moved to the tightest hook and the band still rides up. At that point re-check your size before replacing: bodies change on the same schedule as elastic. Two measurements into the calculator settles it.

Answered

Washing bras: answered

How often should I wash a bra?

Every two to three wears for everyday bras, every wear for sports bras. Skin oils degrade elastic even when a bra looks clean, so "it doesn't smell yet" is not the test.

Can I put a bra in the washing machine?

Yes, with three protections: hooks fastened, inside a lingerie bag, gentle cycle in cold water. What actually kills bras is the dryer: heat destroys elastane. Never machine-dry a bra.

Why does my band feel loose after months of washing?

Elastic fatigues from heat, agitation and wear cycles. That's why a new bra should fit on the loosest hook: the tighter hooks are the elastic's retirement plan. On the tightest hook and still riding up: the band is done.

How many bras do I need in rotation?

Three everyday bras is the practical minimum: elastic recovers its shape over about a day of rest, so wearing the same bra daily ages it roughly twice as fast as alternating.
