Strapless Bras vs Longline Bras
Two constructions that get confused with each other, or chosen between. Here is what actually differs, and which to pick for your shape and your outfit.
Strapless Bras or Longline Bras, in short
A strapless bra is a band-supported bra with removable or no straps, relying on a wide, gripped underband, boning at the sides and a firm cup to stay in place. A longline bra has a band that extends several inches below the cups, sometimes to the waist. Choose the strapless bra for round, teardrop, bell shapes and strapless, off-shoulder; the longline bra for round, bell, relaxed shapes and any; strapless variants. Both start from the same measured size.

Which construction wins where
| Shape | Strapless Bras | Longline Bras |
|---|---|---|
| Round | Fits. Open top sits flat; no gaping | Fits. Fills evenly top to bottom |
| Teardrop | Fits. Open top matches the slope; lift from below | With care. Tall unlined cups gap slightly at the top (shaded); a shorter or seamed full cup is fine |
| Bell | Fits. Seamed balconette; open top avoids the gap | Fits. A plain full cup gapes at the top (shaded); a seamed full cup with side support lifts the low volume up into it: that version fits |
| East-West | With care. Choose a narrow gore | With care. Fine with side-support seams that direct tissue inward |
| Athletic | Fits. Wide, shallow cup shape | Avoid. Deep seamed cups are cut for projection |
| Side Set | With care. Only with a narrow gore | Avoid. Wide gores float or dig at the sternum |
| Relaxed | With care. Seamed only; needs a firm band | Fits. An unseamed full cup gapes at the top (shaded); a wired, seamed lower cup with side support lifts soft tissue into it: that version fits |
| Asymmetrical | With care. Seamed, with a stretch top edge | Fits. Contains the larger side; pad the smaller |
How the sizing rules differ
| Strapless Bras | Longline Bras | |
|---|---|---|
| Rule 1 | Band down, cup up Many fitters recommend one band size smaller than your measured size with the sister cup: the extra grip keeps it up. Some strapless (ThirdLove) run tight already; check the brand note. | Measured band, measured cup The tall band should be snug the whole way down; it should not fold. |
| Rule 2 | Try it on and move Raise your arms; if it slips, go down a band. | Torso length If the band's bottom edge reaches your waist crease, it will roll: choose a shorter longline. |
| Rule 3 | Full-bust strapless Curvy Kate Luxe and Panache strapless run to J/K in UK sizing. | Bustiers Follow bra sizing where offered; alpha bustiers fit the ribcage only. |
Both start from the same measured size. The rules above are adjustments; get the starting size from the calculator.

- Strapless wearers wanting grip
- Longer torsos; smoothing under fitted dresses
- Relaxed and bell shapes at larger cups: a strapless can't lift low, soft tissue
- Anyone whose everyday band is loose: a loose strapless falls
- Short torsos: the band hits the waist and rolls
- Anyone who dislikes firm structure at the ribs
