Longline Bras
A longline extends the band toward the waist, and that extra fabric changes what the bra can do. Here is what it adds, who it suits, and how to size it.
What is a longline bra?
A longline bra has a band that extends several inches below the cups, sometimes to the waist. The taller band spreads support over more of the torso, adds grip (useful for strapless), and smooths the ribcage. Popular in bustier styles and as strapless for occasions.
How it's built
| Part | Detail |
|---|---|
| Band | Tall, often boned; hooks run the full height. |
| Cups | Balconette or full, molded or seamed. |
| Boning | Vertical side and back boning to keep the band from rolling. |
| Straps | Removable on many. |
Materials. Tall band, vertical boning, multiple hook rows.
Types and variations
| Variation | What it is |
|---|---|
| Longline strapless | The common one. |
| Longline balconette | Everyday with a tall band. |
| Bustier | Waist-length; occasion. |
| Longline sports bra | Extra grip for high impact. |

Who it's for
- Anyone whose everyday band rides up: more band, more anchor
- Strapless wearers wanting grip
- Longer torsos; smoothing under fitted dresses
Less suited:
- Short torsos: the band hits the waist and rolls
- Anyone who dislikes firm structure at the ribs
How to size it
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Measured band, measured cup | The tall band should be snug the whole way down; it should not fold. |
| Torso length | If the band's bottom edge reaches your waist crease, it will roll: choose a shorter longline. |
| Bustiers | Follow bra sizing where offered; alpha bustiers fit the ribcage only. |
Start from your measured size. Every rule above is an adjustment to a correct starting point: get that from the calculator or the measuring guide.
How it should fit
| Check | What right looks like |
|---|---|
| Band flat top to bottom | No fold, no roll |
| Cups filled | As any bra |
| Boning lies flat | Not poking at the ribs |
Common problems and the fix
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Band rolls at the bottom | Torso too short for the band height, or band too loose: shorter longline or a band down. |
| Boning digs | Band too tight in the waist section: a longline cut for a shorter torso. |
| Rides up | Band too loose: down a band. |
How to wear and style it
- Fitted dresses, strapless occasion wear
- Anyone whose bands ride up
Care, lifespan and when to replace
- Wash cool; boning channels wear first: hand wash extends life
Pros and cons
Buying checklist
- Measured band and cup
- Band height vs torso length
- No fold at the bottom
Sizing a longline bra by cup range
The measured size is the start at every cup, but the construction behaves differently as the load grows, and some ranges need a different rule or a different house.
| Cup range (US) | How a longline bra sizes here | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| AA to B | Mostly a fashion or bridal piece at this size; support is not the reason to buy it | Measured size; check the band length against the torso |
| C to DD | Useful as a strapless base and for smoothing; the taller band holds better than a standard strapless | Sister size a band down if strapless |
| DDD to G | Where the longline earns its keep: spreads a heavy load across more ribcage | Measured size; sister size down for strapless |
| H and above | The construction that makes strapless possible at this size | Measured size, fit by try-on; boned versions |
Fit checks specific to a longline bra
The six general checks in the fit guide apply; these four are where this style fails first.
- The bottom edge sits above the waist bend: a longline that folds under the bust is the wrong length, not the wrong size
- The band is as snug as a standard band all the way down, not tighter at the top and loose below
- Boning, if any, lies flat and does not dig at the front when you sit
- For strapless longlines, the jump test: the band stays level and the top edge stays on the breast
How brands cut it differently
Longline length is a house decision that no chart states: bridal and shapewear lines cut to the waist, full-bust lines cut to the ribcage, and a long torso can wear the first where a short torso can only wear the second. Boning and hook count also vary; the full-bust longlines use four or more rows. The measured size holds; the length has to be tried. The brand dossiers record each house’s band, cup and wire tendency.

What is a longline bra for?
Spreading the band’s load over more of the ribcage, which makes a heavy bust easier to carry and a strapless bra possible at sizes a standard strapless cannot hold. It also smooths the line under structured dresses, which is why bridal longlines exist.
Should a longline bra be tight?
As snug as a standard band, along its whole height, on the loosest hook. It should not be tighter at the top than at the bottom, and it should not fold: a fold means the length is wrong for your torso, not the size.
