The Best Plus-Size Bras: Full-Figure Bras That Are Cut for the Size

Past a 40 band the market splits the same way it does past an F cup: ranges that grade a 34 upward until the band gives out, and ranges drafted for the size from the first pattern. Full-figure bras are the second kind. Here is what "cut for the size" means in construction terms, whose charts reach 46, 50 and 54, and how to check the band before the cup.

What actually matters

Choosing by construction

Plus size is a band story first. The cup problems of a large bust and the band problems of a large frame are different, and a plus-size bra has to solve the second even when the cup is a C. A 44 band carries more load over a softer torso than a 34 does, so the band is taller (more powernet between the cup and the closure), the wing is wider where it meets the cup, and the closure has three or four rows of hooks. A band graded up from a small block keeps the small block’s height and rolls, folds or digs; a drafted band lies flat. The band rolling and back bulge pages show what each failure looks like.

Wires get wider, not just longer. The same cup letter is broader on a wider ribcage, so a 44D wire is closer in width to a 36G wire than to a 34D one. Full-figure lines draft this; graded ranges do not, and the result is a wire that ends on breast tissue at the side. Side-support slings and taller side panels, standard in the UK full-bust houses, do the same job on soft plus-size tissue that they do on a large cup: they hold it forward where the cup can carry it. The side-support guide explains the construction.

Wireless can be engineered, or it can be a bralette. Plus-size wireless bras sell on comfort and fail on support unless the band and cup seams are built to carry the load without a frame. The ones that work have a firm, wide underband, a seamed or molded cup with an inner sling, and a size chart in band and cup rather than S to 3X. Alpha sizing at this end of the ladder folds four bands and six cups into one letter; the supportive wireless page lists the constructions that hold.

Cup range narrows as the band grows. At a 40 most brands still cut A to H; at 46 the choice is C to H; at 50 and beyond it is C to G in a handful of styles. That is not a comment on bodies; it is where the demand and the pattern-making are. If your measured size is a 48B or a 50H, the honest answer is that a sister size one step in is easier to find, and the size guides below badge who genuinely cuts each one.

Answered

Plus size and full figure, answered

What is the difference between plus-size bras and full-figure bras?

Retail language, mostly. "Plus size" describes the band (roughly 40 and up), "full figure" describes a bra built for a larger frame at any cup, and "full bust" describes the cup (DD and up) at any band. A 44B is plus size and full figure but not full bust; a 32G is full bust and neither of the others. The construction that matters follows the band: height, wing width and wire breadth.

What bra size is considered plus size?

There is no official line; retailers usually mean bands of 40 or 42 and above, and some mean 38. The bra does not care about the label. What changes with the band is the engineering the bra needs, and a drafted 40 band from a full-figure line fits better than a graded-up 40 from a mass-market one whatever either is called.

Are wireless bras supportive at plus sizes?

The engineered ones are: a firm, wide underband, seamed or slinged cups, and sizing in band and cup rather than alpha. A wireless bra sold in S to 3X supports the ribcage it fits and little else. Above a DD cup on any band, a wire or a very well-built wireless construction is what carries the weight.

Why do my plus-size bras roll at the band?

Usually because the band is graded up from a small block and is too short in height for the torso, so it folds where the ribcage curves. A taller band, a wider wing, or a longline fixes it; going tighter does not, and often makes it worse. Check the band sits level and snug on the loosest hook first.

Where do I find bras above a 48 band?

Cacique cuts to 54 in the dossiers, Playtex and Hanes to 50, Elomi to 48 with some styles at 50. Beyond 54 the choice is made-to-measure. Cup ranges at these bands run C to G or H; a sister size one step in (band down, cup up) is often easier to find and fits the same breast.
