Shallow: Wide Base, Little Depth, Endless Gaping
Shallow is the most misdiagnosed geometry in the fitting room: volume spread across the chest instead of extending forward. The cup's deepest point expects tissue that isn't there, the apex gapes, and the fitting loop of ever-smaller letters begins: solving nothing, because the volume was never wrong.
What shallow means (and doesn't)
Shallow describes distribution, not amount: your volume sits on a wide footprint with modest forward projection. It is not “small”: shallow G cups exist and gape exactly like shallow B cups when the cup's curve is deeper than the body's. The tell that separates shallow from simple oversizing: the wire and band fit, the volume is demonstrably yours (side and bottom of cup full), yet the front third of the cup stands empty.
The misdiagnosis loop
The standard loop: apex gapes → fitter sizes the cup down → now the wire is too narrow for the (wide, remember) root and the bottom overfills while the top still gapes → down again → spillage plus gaping simultaneously, which everyone declares impossible. Escape by re-reading the first symptom: gaping with correct volume elsewhere is a shape signal, not a size signal. Our gaping page draws exactly this line.
What actually fits
Constructions that put less mold in front of you and more give: demi and balconette cuts whose lower profile ends before the empty zone; stretch-lace or unlined upper panels that contract onto whatever depth exists; shallower molded curves (some houses cut their T-shirt lines notably shallow: a feature, for you); and where straps meet cups wider apart, following a wide root. Padding is legitimate here too, used structurally: a shaped lower pad fills the depth the mold expects so the rest can lie flat.
The vocabulary around you
Shallow is one pole of the projection spectrum: the opposite of projected, and it usually travels with a wide root. Fullness distribution is a separate axis: shallow-and-full-on-bottom is a common pairing with its own tricks. The shape guides connect the named shapes to these variables.
Shallow: answered
Are shallow breasts a cup size?
No: shallow exists at every letter. It describes how volume is distributed (wide and forward-light), not how much volume there is. Shallow G cups gape in deep cups exactly like shallow B cups do.
Why do I gape on top but spill underneath?
Classic shallow-in-a-deep-cup: the mold's depth expects forward tissue you don't have (gape) while its wire is narrower than your wide root, pushing tissue out at the bottom or sides (spill). Shape fix, not size fix.
Do push-up bras solve shallowness?
They can, mechanically: graduated padding fills the front of the mold. But the elegant solutions are cuts that don't demand the depth in the first place: demi profiles, stretch tops, shallow molds. Padding becomes a choice, not a requirement.
