Full on Top: When the Volume Lives Upstairs
Fullness placement is its own axis: the same volume can concentrate above the nipple line or below it. Full-on-top tissue meets a bra's top edge where the tissue is widest: which is why the plunge that fits your friend overflows on you at the identical measured size.
What full-on-top means
Draw a horizontal line through the apex. Full-on-top (FOT) breasts carry the greater share of volume above that line: firm upper poles, a profile that curves outward from the collarbone down. It's common in younger, denser tissue and after some augmentations, and it is volume-independent: FOT happens at 32B and at 32G. The mirror check is the profile view: does the upper slope bulge convex, or descend straight and then curve late?
The signature symptoms
Everything happens at the top edge. Demi and plunge cuts cross the breast exactly where FOT tissue is fullest, so they quad-boob at the correct volume: the size isn't wrong; the neckline's crossing point is. Rigid top edges leave a visible ridge under shirts. Meanwhile the bottom of the cup may sit slightly loose, tempting a size-down that turns mild top spill into severe. If full-coverage styles fit you cleanly while low cuts overflow, that asymmetry is the diagnosis.
What actually fits
Top edges that accommodate instead of amputate: full-coverage and three-quarter cups that crest above the fullness; stretch-lace upper panels that flex over the upper pole instead of cutting into it; balconettes with taller upper sections. When you want a plunge anyway, choose one with a soft, elastic edge and accept a soft line, or wear it as the occasion bra it is. What to avoid buying in multiples: rigid low demis and anything whose top edge lands mid-fullness.
The vocabulary around you
FOT's mirror twin is full-on-bottom; both are independent of projection and root width, and the combinations behave differently: projected-FOT is the plunge-killer, shallow-FOT often loves a simple stretch top. The shape guides place the named shapes (round, teardrop and kin) on this axis.
Full on top: answered
Is full-on-top better or worse for bra fit?
Neither: it's a placement, and construction exists for every placement. FOT fits beautifully in full-coverage and stretch-top cuts and badly in rigid low demis; the reverse of its bottom-full twin.
Why do I spill in a demi but fit a T-shirt bra in the same size?
Because the demi's edge crosses your fullest zone and the T-shirt bra's crests above it. Same volume, different crossing points: the size is fine; the cut decides.
Does full-on-top change with age?
Commonly, yes: tissue tends to soften and settle lower over time, migrating toward bottom-fullness. It's one of the quiet reasons the styles that fit at 25 misbehave at 45 while the tape says nothing changed.
