Unlined Bras
An unlined bra shows exactly what fits and what doesn't: there's no foam to hide behind. Here is who it suits, why fitters love it for shape diagnosis, and how to size it.
What is a unlined bra?
An unlined bra has cups made of a single layer of fabric (lace, mesh or cotton) with no foam or padding. Support comes from seams, wire and band; the breast keeps its natural shape. Cuup built a whole brand on it; full-bust houses make unlined balconettes to K.
How it's built
| Part | Detail |
|---|---|
| Cups | Single-layer, usually seamed for shape; sheer or opaque. |
| Wire | Standard; does more of the work without foam. |
| Band | Standard. |
| Straps | Standard. |
Materials. Lace, mesh, cotton; seams for structure. Standard wire and band.
Types and variations
| Variation | What it is |
|---|---|
| Seamed unlined | Three-part lace or mesh; supportive. |
| Sheer mesh unlined | Minimal, shows shape. |
| Stretch-lace unlined | Soft; light support. |
| Unlined balconette / plunge | By shape. |
Which shapes it fits, and why
Tap a breast shape. The dashed line is this cup on that profile; shading shows where the shape leaves a gap or spills.

Who it's for
- Round, teardrop and full-on-top shapes: seams shape without foam
- Warm climates and anyone who dislikes foam
- Fitters diagnosing shape: an unlined bra shows the truth
Less suited:
- Anyone wanting nipple coverage under thin tops
- Bell and relaxed shapes in unstructured unlined styles: seamed unlined works, unseamed doesn't
How to size it
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Size as measured | Nothing to compensate for a mismatch. |
| Seams matter | Three-part seamed unlined cups lift; single-piece stretch lace does not. |
| Between sizes | Go up a cup: spillage shows immediately in an unlined cup. |
Start from your measured size. Every rule above is an adjustment to a correct starting point: get that from the calculator or the measuring guide.
How it should fit
| Check | What right looks like |
|---|---|
| Fabric taut across the cup | Wrinkles mean too big; strain means too small |
| Seams sit where the shape changes | The horizontal seam should cross at or just below the nipple line |
| Wire on the ribcage | As any bra |
Common problems and the fix
| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Wrinkling at the top | Cup too big or shape mismatch (bell/relaxed in an unseamed unlined cup). |
| Nipple show-through | By design in sheer styles: choose opaque or lined. |
| Spillage | Cup too small; unlined shows it fast. |
How to wear and style it
- Where a smooth line isn't required, or opaque tops
- Fitting rooms: for diagnosis
Care, lifespan and when to replace
- Delicate; hand wash lace
- Replace when lace loses recovery
Pros and cons
Buying checklist

Sizing a unlined bra by cup range
The measured size is the start at every cup, but the construction behaves differently as the load grows, and some ranges need a different rule or a different house.
| Cup range (US) | How a unlined bra sizes here | What to buy |
|---|---|---|
| AA to B | Shows shape and nipple; sheer unlined is the lightest bra made | Measured size; seams show under thin knits |
| C to DD | Fits more shapes than a mold; seams may show under thin fabric | Measured size, judged after a scoop |
| DDD to G | The specialist choice: seamed unlined cups hold their shape under load better than foam | Measured size in UK letters by position |
| H and above | The construction that fits and supports here | Measured size; three-part cups with side support |
Fit checks specific to a unlined bra
The six general checks in the fit guide apply; these four are where this style fails first.
- Scoop, then read: an unlined cup shows exactly how full it is, so judge it only after the tissue is placed
- Seams lie flat with no ridge under the apex; a ridge is a cup a letter short
- The top edge lies flat: a lace edge that folds outward is too much cup, one that cuts in is too little
- Wire behind the root; unlined full-bust cups run wide
How brands cut it differently
Seam count and placement are the whole fit story in unlined cups. Two-part cups spread and suit shallow shapes; three-part cups project and suit deep ones; four-part cups do both and are the full-bust standard. Sheer, non-stretch lace runs true; stretch lace forgives a half cup. Houses cut all three, and the dossier says which a brand favors. The brand dossiers record each house’s band, cup and wire tendency.

Unlined Bras: answered
What does unlined bra mean?
Cups made of a single fabric layer with no foam or padding; support from seams, wire and band.
Are unlined bras supportive?
Seamed unlined bras are: full-bust brands make them to K cups. Unseamed stretch-lace unlined bras are not.
Do unlined bras run small?
No, but they show a mismatch immediately; if between sizes go up a cup.
How should a unlined bra fit?
Fabric taut across the cup: wrinkles mean too big; strain means too small; Seams sit where the shape changes: the horizontal seam should cross at or just below the nipple line; Wire on the ribcage: as any bra. Start from your measured size and adjust only for the rules specific to this style.
What are the types of unlined bras?
Seamed unlined (three-part lace or mesh; supportive; Sheer mesh unlined) minimal, shows shape; Stretch-lace unlined (soft; light support; Unlined balconette / plunge) by shape.
How often should I replace a unlined bra?
Replace when lace loses recovery
What should I wear a unlined bra under?
Where a smooth line isn't required, or opaque tops; Fitting rooms: for diagnosis.
Which brands make the best unlined bras?
Cuup (The Balconette / The Scoop), Panache (Andorra unlined), Freya (Offbeat unlined), Empreinte (Cassiopée), Simone Pérèle (Caresse), Savage X Fenty (Savage Not Sorry unlined): each brand page converts your measured size and notes how it runs.
What is the difference between unlined and non-padded?
Non-padded means no foam added for volume; the cup may still be lined with a second fabric layer. Unlined means a single layer of fabric with nothing behind it. Most non-padded contour bras are lined; an unlined bra is never padded.
Are unlined bras less supportive?
Often more supportive, especially above a DD: seams can be engineered for lift and side support in ways foam cannot, and a single layer weighs less. Support comes from the band, the wire and the seams; a lining was never where it came from.
