What Is Bust Size?

Bust size is the circumference around the fullest part of the breasts. It is half of a bra size, the whole of a dress size, and the measurement most people mean when they say "chest" and most bra charts mean when they say neither. Here is what it is, what it is not, and how it turns into a cup letter.

Key takeaway

Bust is the tape around the fullest point of the breasts; underbust is the tape around the ribcage beneath them. Bust minus underbust, one inch per letter, is the cup. A bust measurement alone is not a bra size: a 38-inch bust is a 32DDD, a 34D or a 36B.

Bust meaning: the measurement and the word

In sizing, the bust is the circumference of the torso at the fullest part of the breasts, measured with the tape level around the body, usually at nipple height. It is a body measurement, taken in inches in the US and UK and in centimeters everywhere else, and it means the same thing on a bra chart, a dress chart and a dressmaker’s pattern. "Bust size" and "bust measurement" are the same number.

The word is older than the measurement. "Bust" came into English from the Italian busto, a sculpture of head and shoulders, and by the nineteenth century meant the upper body of a woman as a dressmaker measured it. Sizing kept the word because it names the one circumference that distinguishes a bodice from a shirt. In everyday speech it drifts: people say bust for the breasts themselves, or for a bra size ("a 34DD bust"), and neither is the sizing meaning. On this site bust always means the tape at the fullest point.

Three tapes

Bust vs underbust vs chest

Three circumferences get called "chest," and a bra size needs two of them to be kept apart. The bust is over the breasts at their fullest. The underbust is under the breasts, around the ribcage where the band sits; it is the smaller of the two on every body and the one that becomes the band number. "Chest" is the ambiguous one: in menswear and in medicine it is the ribcage at the pectorals, roughly the underbust; in casual speech it often means the bust. When a chart says chest without saying which, assume the underbust for bras and the bust for tops, and measure both.

The underbust lookup and the bust lookup each list every size a single measurement can be, which is the clearest demonstration that neither one alone is a size.

The arithmetic

How bust size relates to cup size

The cup letter is the bust minus the band, at one inch per letter: a bust one inch over the band is an A, two is a B, three a C, four a D, five a DD, six a DDD, seven a G, eight an H. The bust measurement sets the ceiling of that sum and the band sets the floor, which is why the same bust can be almost any cup. A 38-inch bust is a 36B on a 36 band, a 34D on a 34, a 32DDD on a 32 and a 30H on a 30: one number, four sizes, and every one of them describes a different breast on a different ribcage.

Two consequences follow. First, "bust size" is not a euphemism for cup size, though it is used as one; a 40-inch bust can be small-breasted on a wide ribcage or full-breasted on a narrow one. Second, a bust measurement is only useful when the band is measured with it, and it must be measured the same way every time: level, at the fullest point, relaxed, over an unpadded bra, because a padded bra adds an inch and a compressing tape removes one, and each inch is a cup letter. The how bra sizes work page has the full walkthrough; the chart with pictures draws every combination.

How to measure bust size

  1. Wear an unpadded bra that fits reasonably, or no bra if your tissue is firm enough to hold its position. Padding adds an inch; going braless on soft tissue removes one.
  2. Stand straight, arms down, in front of a mirror. Breathe normally.
  3. Wrap a soft tape around the fullest part of the breasts, usually at nipple level, and check in the mirror that it is level at the back. A tape that dips at the back reads small.
  4. Hold it snug against the body without compressing the breast. The tape should touch all the way round and press nothing in.
  5. Read it to the nearest half inch or centimeter. That is your bust.
  6. Take the underbust the same way, but snug: the tape pulled firm around the ribcage under the breasts, level, on a normal exhale. Round to the nearest even inch for the band, subtract the band from the bust for the cup.

The measuring guide shows both tape positions with diagrams and the common errors: measuring over a padded bra, letting the tape drop at the back, pulling the bust tape as tight as the underbust tape, and adding inches to the band, which every legacy chart did and no modern one should.

Bands are the snug underbust rounded to the nearest even inch (the column headers give the range each band fits). Cups above H are shown as US letters I, J and K; UK and EU letters for the same rungs are on the cup size chart.

The other chart

Bust size in clothing and dress sizes

Clothing charts use the bust alone, because a dress does not have a band. A US women’s size chart runs roughly bust 32 to 33 inches at size 2, 34 to 35 at size 6, 36 to 37 at size 10, 38 to 40 at size 14 and 42 to 44 at size 18, with every brand drawing its own lines; UK sizes are the US number plus four. The chart is honest as far as it goes, and it goes no further than the bust: two people with a 38-inch bust and 30 and 36-inch underbusts are the same dress size and five bra sizes apart, and the one with the small ribcage will find the dress fits at the bust and floats at the waist.

That is why fitted clothing and bras are sized differently and why the bust measurement matters for both. For a top, it is the size. For a bra, it is half the size, and the half that only means something once the ribcage under it is measured too. The alpha size converter maps S to XL to bra sizes for the garments that split the difference.

Answered

Bust size: answered

What does bust mean?

The bust is the fullest part of the chest, measured as a circumference around the body at nipple level. In clothing it is the measurement that sizes tops and dresses; in bras it is one of the two numbers that produce a size, the other being the underbust.

What is bust size?

Your bust size is the circumference in inches or centimeters around the fullest point of the breasts, taken with the tape level and relaxed, over an unpadded bra. It is not a bra size on its own: a 38-inch bust is a 36B, a 34D or a 32DDD depending on the ribcage under it.

What does bust mean in a size chart?

In a clothing size chart, bust is the full circumference the garment is cut to fit, so a "bust 36" dress fits a 36-inch measurement. In a bra chart it is the bust measurement that, subtracted from the band, gives the cup letter. The two charts use the same tape reading for different purposes.

How do I measure bust size?

Wear an unpadded bra, stand straight, and wrap a soft tape around the fullest part of the breasts, level all the way round, snug but not compressing. Read it in inches or centimeters. Then take the underbust snug under the breasts; the difference between the two, one inch per letter, is the cup.

Is bust size the same as cup size?

No. Bust is a measurement; cup is the difference between that measurement and the band. A 40-inch bust on a 36 band is a D; the same bust on a 32 band is a G. Cup size only exists relative to a band.

What is the difference between bust and chest?

Chest is the circumference of the ribcage, usually measured under the breasts (the underbust) or, in menswear, across the fullest part of the pectorals. Bust is the circumference over the breasts at their fullest point. For women the chest measurement is the band, the bust measurement gives the cup.
