Sophisticated Pair
One of the first online calculators to refuse the add-four rule, written by the owner of a North Carolina bra boutique and still the calculator many fitting communities send people to. The shop has closed and the old domain has changed hands; the calculator itself lives on. Here is how it works and how its result compares with ours.
Sophisticated Pair in numbers
A Sophisticated Pair was a small, family-owned lingerie boutique in Burlington, North Carolina, that specialized in full-bust sizes and, in the early 2010s, published a bra size calculator built by its owner, a former programmer, after she found most of the calculators online produced sizes that were plainly wrong. It measured the band without adding inches at a time when almost every retailer added four, which is why fitting forums adopted it. The boutique has since closed, and the domain sophisticatedpair.com was sold to another company that now runs unrelated content and a calculator of its own under the old name. The original calculator is maintained at the founder’s site, sophisticatednotion.com, where it is licensed from her consulting company.
How the Sophisticated Pair calculator works
Two inputs, a snug underbust and a full-bust measurement, in inches or centimeters, decimals allowed. If the underbust is an even number, that is the band. If it is odd, the calculator asks whether you prefer a snug or a loose band and rounds down or up accordingly. The bust is rounded to the nearest inch, the band is subtracted, and each inch is one cup: 1 A, 2 B, 3 C, 4 D, 5 DD, 6 DDD, on US letters, with the UK equivalent shown. The result is labeled a starting point, and the instructions say plainly that trying bras on decides the size.
That is the same arithmetic this site publishes, with two differences worth knowing. This calculator rounds an odd underbust up to the next even band and tells you to try the band below with the cup adjusted; Sophisticated Pair lets you choose the direction first. And this site takes the bust as measured rather than rounding it before the subtraction, which can move a borderline reading by a letter. Enter the same two numbers into both and the results agree in most cases and differ by one sister step in the rest.
| Rule | Sophisticated Pair calculator | Brasize.ai calculator |
|---|---|---|
| Band | Snug underbust; even number is the band | Snug underbust; nearest even number |
| Odd underbust | Your choice: round down (snug) or up (loose) | Rounds up; suggests the sister size a band down |
| Cup | Bust rounded to the inch, minus band, one inch per letter | Bust minus band, one inch per letter |
| Inches added | None | None |
| Systems | US with UK letters | US, UK, EU, FR, AU, IT, JP |
| Output | One size plus band preference | Size, sister sizes, size page, brand run |
Method described from the calculator’s published instructions and a 2012 independent analysis of its arithmetic; the calculator’s code is closed and licensed, so its exact rounding at the half-inch is inferred, not read.
Same two tapes, both methods
Enter a snug underbust and a bust measurement and the tool shows the size this site returns and the size the Sophisticated Pair method returns, with the odd-band choice spelled out where the two can differ.
Where to use it, and what to watch
The original calculator is at sophisticatednotion.com. The calculator now shown at sophisticatedpair.com belongs to the domain’s new operator and is not the tool the fitting communities recommended; treat it as any other unaudited calculator.
Both this calculator and Sophisticated Pair’s reduce to the same two measurements. Enter them here as well; where the two disagree, the difference is the odd-band choice, and the sister size explains it.
The founder said so herself and this site says the same: the number tells you what to try first. The fit guide decides the rest.
Sophisticated Pair: answered
Is the Sophisticated Pair bra size calculator accurate?
Its arithmetic is the snug-band method, which is the right one, and in independent testing it produced sizes close to a fitter’s. Like every calculator it gives a starting size from two measurements and cannot see shape or brand cut, so treat the result as the size to try first, then adjust by the fit checks.
Does the Sophisticated Pair calculator add inches?
No. It uses the snug underbust as the band, which is what set it apart from most calculators when it launched. Odd readings are rounded to an even band in the direction you choose.
Is A Sophisticated Pair still open?
The Burlington, North Carolina boutique has closed. The founder continues to write about bra fitting at sophisticatednotion.com, where the original calculator is hosted. The sophisticatedpair.com domain was sold and is now run by a different company.
How does the Sophisticated Pair result compare with this site’s?
Same band rule, same one-inch-per-cup rule, so the results agree in most cases. They can differ by one sister step when the underbust is odd (Sophisticated Pair lets you round either way; this site rounds up and suggests the band down) or when the bust sits on a half inch.
Which calculator should I use?
Either, with the same two measurements; the arithmetic is shared. This site adds the sister sizes, the size guide and the brand run for the result, and a checker for comparing a fitter’s number against the tape. Whichever you use, the try-on decides.
Editorial reference; not an endorsement. Brasize.ai does not sell bras.
Opens HauteFlair’s own hub page; use your measured size there. HauteFlair is owned by the same company as Brasize.ai; that relationship never changes the sizing math, charts, or fit advice on this page. How this site makes money.
