H&M Bra Sizing, Honestly Decoded

H&M sells bras in more countries than almost anyone, sizes them on an EU centimeter base, and publishes a measuring guide in its own name that adds five or six inches to your underbust before calling it a band. That single piece of arithmetic, printed in the guide, is the whole fitting story: the garments themselves are conventionally sized, and the instructions for reaching them are the problem.

The short answer

H&M sizes its bras on an EU centimeter base with inch conversions, and its own published measuring guide instructs adding five or six inches to your underbust before calling the result a band size. That method produces bands one to two sizes looser than a snug fit. Your snug measured size is the correct starting point; the guide’s arithmetic is the thing to ignore.

How H&M sizing works, and where it goes wrong

H&M’s bras carry standard EU sizing: a number in centimeters for the band, a letter for the cup, converted to US/UK equivalents in the chart. A 75B is a US 34B. The conversion is orderly and the garments land where their EU labels say they will.

The measuring guide is a different document. Its instructions for finding your band size are quoted from H&M’s own published guide: measure under the bust, and "if it is an odd number add 5 inches, if it is an even number add 6 inches," with the guide’s own example turning a 29-inch ribcage into a size 34 band and a 30-inch one into a 36. That is the classic add-inches convention, designed in an era of non-stretch corsetry, and on modern stretch bras it reliably produces a band one to two sizes larger than a snug fit. Every symptom the add-inches band generates, the riding band, the strap load transferring to your shoulders, the cup letter that comes out smaller than it should, is documented in the riding-band guide and the back-pain page.

The guide’s sister-size section is, ironically, correctly written: it explains moving diagonally across the chart to preserve cup volume while changing the band, with the right worked examples. The math is sound; only the starting number is wrong. The practical fix is to ignore the +5/6 instruction and start from the snug measured number, then read the EU chart in either direction from there. The widget below shows what the guide’s method would return next to your measured size, so the gap is visible before the fitting room.

Fit character

Does H&M run small or big?

Band: The printed guide adds 5 to 6 inches to your underbust before naming a band. That produces bands one to two sizes looser than a modern snug fit, which means H&M’s recommended band is effectively one to two sizes "big" by the modern standard. If you follow the guide and your band rides up, you are experiencing the method’s output, not a fit anomaly. The snug measured band is the correction.

Cup: Because the cup letter is calculated from the added-inches band rather than the measured band, the guide’s cup answer also lands wrong: a body that correctly wears a 34D reads out as a 36C by the +6 method, one band up and one cup down. Expect your honest size to carry a larger cup letter than the guide suggests, and to fit a snugger band.

Shopping it well

What to try at H&M

Measure snugly, treat the result as your EU band (a 34-inch ribcage is a 75 in EU sizing, not an 80 or 85), and open H&M’s chart from that number. The product page’s own size picker is the availability truth, since not every chart size appears in every product. If the snug band still feels firm in the first few wears, note whether the stiffness is the band or the newness: most stretch bands relax slightly in the first few wears, and a day-one verdict is one of the worst times to size up. If it genuinely digs, the band-digging guide separates size from cup-too-small as the cause.

Answered

H&M sizing: answered

Is H&M bra sizing accurate?

The garments are conventionally EU-sized; the measuring method in the guide is the problem: it adds 5 to 6 inches to the underbust, producing bands 1 to 2 sizes looser than a modern fit. Measure snugly, use the measured number as your EU band, and treat the printed method as a relic.

What is my H&M bra size?

Your normal EU size: a 33-inch underbust is a 75, a 35-inch is an 80. The US 34 corresponds to EU 75, US 36 to EU 80. If you only know the size H&M’s guide gave you, your snug measured size will likely be 1 to 2 bands smaller with a larger cup letter.

Why does my H&M bra ride up at the back?

Almost certainly the add-inches band: a band sized by the +5/6 method has 1 to 2 sizes of built-in slack, and slack bands ride to the shoulder blades while straps take the load. The riding-band fix has the full diagnostic; the short fix is the snug measured band.

How do I convert my H&M bra size to US?

EU band to US: subtract 10 from the EU number and divide by 2.54, rounding to the nearest even inch. EU 75 is US 34, EU 80 is US 36, EU 85 is US 38. Cups convert by position on the same alphabet. The system converter does both directions instantly.

Does H&M carry large cup sizes?

Cup availability varies per product and is shown on each product page’s selector. Not every size in the published chart exists in every style. The chart is the ceiling; the product page is the floor.
